Doive i suggest you go and check your oil level straight away , an m20 takes 5 litres. Does this mean its all running ok and the head is alright! ,if so your a lucky man. Don't get carried away and start throwing money at it . Most e28s have to be viewed as disposable transport, once something expensive (i.e £200 +) goes wrong bin it and find another. A nice (are there any left?) 525e is a very pleasant car but alas is nigh on worthless. As for your 'specialist' friend he obviously doesn't sell cars for a living !, its been a while since any e28 (M5 or Alpina excepted) sold for £2500.

I'm tempted to enquire about the m535, but if you say it's a scrapper it's gotta be bad!! I just want an e28 to smoke around in. I'm trying to move away from the e23, lovely old cars, but I can't stand the abuse!!

I think there was a 524d too (non turbo). Also available as 324d and td. These models never produced in rh drive.
Parts should be no problem whatsoever. You see loads of these car in mainland Europe. I think BMWGB keep the oil filters for the few that are in the UK. Other mainstream specific parts would be 48/72 hours from back order.
I knew a guy with a 524td (e28) auto who said the economy and performence were fantastic.
