Thanks for interest and info Think AG may have been the member who gave the helpful rundown on the 7 forum.

The car is "c" reg, think good history, has all bells and whistles all in working order. More interested in condition, which apart from bonnet is excellent ( 525e had full BMW service history and was rotten front to rear).

I like straight sixes and cars of that era. Paid more than worth for a Vauxhall Royale coupe and an SD1 Rover a few years back (before Nigel nagged me into trying a BMW)largely as unusual and "sixes". Prefer to have something to do on them even though health means now limited to how much I can manage. I really liked the E28 525e and current E28 520i, and E23 appeals, "rather unloved" makes it my sort of car, lol! IanT

Paul, do you really need fully comp on an older car? other members recommend TPFT for older cars.

My E28 528i premium was £175 last renewal for TPFT.

rubberknees,

don't listen to the whingers who slag off E23's. E24's and E28's have strong followings, and for good reason as they are great cars. The E23 is made from the same components and built by the same factory. There's 'nowt wrong wi' E23's, lad.

The late cars B/C/D regd are at their best in 735i SE spec with 4 speed switchable auto, climate control, cruise, moonroof, leather etc.

For £800 the paintwork defects should be fixed by the seller and the car should be exceptionally nice, with history.

As AG says these cars are very undervalued, so bargain hard.

The cars do suffer from a lack of value it's true, and will never be worth a great deal, as they are rather unloved, but there is a dedicated band of owners/enthusiasts around, and they are great cars.
For purely smoking around in, they are superb.
Does it have a lot of history?

Hi all. E23. Ok, local BM servicer has several Bm's laying about, some his personal ones, one of which is a diamond black 735iSE. Needs bonnet relaquerring but otherwise seems ok, he swears it's solid, happy for me or specialist to inspect, been stood mostly as he doesn't get time to drive it, wants to see it used.

Met him by accident while I had the late E28 525e, he's got people interested in it but knows I like older cars and will look after it, wants around £800 for it with 12 months MoT.

I posted for advice/info on 7 forum and got one lot of helpful stuff off one member and a load of grief of another who said they're crap. worth naff all and money pits(thats the cleaned up version)

I'm still trying to get a deposit on it as I had a lot of family stuff and health problems to deal with over Xmas but it's got my name on it!

Best this year for a 2000 535iA was Admiral for a 44 yr old

Fully comp with a 250.00 excess and 8 yrs ncb - 450.00 and no problems with a winter set of 17" replica alloys just tick the box on the web site which had alloys (aftermarket) listed

Currently E38 - 740

I wish!

Total excess is £900.

£700 Compulsory

£200 Voluntary

New insurance is likely to lead to a drop to a total of £700 (£500 C, £200 V).

I fitted 16" E38 rims to my E23 and 15" E34 rims to my E28.

also, underwriter wants lockers fitted to alloys, a sensible precaution.

Please tell me about your E23!

Yes, there is a new business price war going on. I prevously rejected a quote in the £400s for a new policy. today was quoted £275. 60% introductory disc for a new policy/new client!

I recently had a similar conversation with the RAC. Club member, over 50 (just), limited mileage, RAC member and they were quoting £300 excess on £200 bog standard E28.

Did you fit BMW wheels, ie E34 alloys etc or where they aftermarket and considered a modification? I ask as I am negotiating for an E23 in addition to my E28 and it has the dreaded metrics on it.

Been told by a friend that Insurance companies are cutting throats to get new business, so I insured with AA, and as loyalty means nothing to insurers these days (RAC offered me 10% loyalty reduction for a 15% increase and there were 7 lower quotes) I will change insurers every year if I have to!  IanT

the E23 is on TPFT.

the E28 best quote (lowest premium) was for comp! weird but apparently true in this case.

The excess is on the payout by the company and could be used to pay for damage to another car (as well as your own) which may be worth significantly more (e.g. a maybach!)

I am on 150 excess which is small and I could take on more, but the price benefits were not that great! After all, the excess is only lost if an accident is your fault!!

Just remember insurance companies will do anything in their power NOT to pay out, that is their business. Forget all this WE CARE rubbish - We deal with computers today with people reading off 'call cards' and most of the time with any mods......"The computer says....NO"

If you told your insurance company that some bird has crapped on your car, they will probably put your premium up.

As for changing you wheels, what a load of nonsense charging more, they could refuse to insure the different wheels and only cover the standard items previously fitted.

Insurance companies make my blood boil! Ugh!

What a corker. I confessed to my broker that I have converted my E23 & E28 from metric to imperial BMW rims. The underwriter has gone into panic mode and slapped a whopping £500 excess on the E23 (excess was £350 before I confessed). for the E28 the excess is £150 (different u/writer though).

On current mkt values are my cars effectively uninsured?

What policy excesses are other members suffering?
