Hi all, sympathise with Doive, agree with other advise to shop around. Have you tried getting 525e on classic policy? so few of these left in good condition.

In line with Rhys (though not about knitted blanket) I have agrued for years that ALL drivers should have to do a stint on mopeds, like the London cabbies do for "the knowledge", you feel very vulnerable with no metal all round fairing, and not enough power to run!

I also think, despite not having been on one, that Nigels advanced drivers courses are good news, standards are so low these days any training is good news, and as he says, you get less stressed. I learnt on motorbikes excess speed doesn't get you there any quicker, but better driving can.....still like going fast though! IanT

I would give the following advice

1) Pull over so they have no option but to overtake you.

2) You just have to move to avoid a collision, not rocket science, just plain fact, feel free to take redg no, company name etc, and let the Police deal.

The course changed my perspective of other peoples driving beyond recognition.

I'm now much more relaxed, generally get somewhere quicker, don't get wound up, and don't tend to have close shaves.

The course is £85 all in, however many lessons you need, test, and first years membership, this drops to £75 for the under 26's, and some groups, mine included knock another tenner off for the youngsters bringing it down to £65.

No Rhys you don't get a knitted blanket, take a poke in the eye, I agree with you about motorcycles, I have a full ticket for them too, have done since I was 17, but despite that, I still learned a lot.

If anyone is in the slightest bit interested, pm me your details, name address etc, and I will get your local group to contact you to give you a free no obligation assessment drive.

Feel free to contact me about anything to do with advanced driving, I'll do my best to help you.

Best Wishes

Nigel

Nigel, how much does it cost to do a course, and do you get a free complimentry knitted blanket et la, for the back seat?

Found out the best think to develop your driving awareness is to do a motorcycle course. I did a DL196 (cbt) a few years ago, when I got back in my car I found I was a lot more alert, and my driving improved.

Nigel,

how has your advanced driving course changed your driving, and your awareness of other peoples driving?

Just a thought to you new members, especially the younger ones :

Have a look at doing your advanced ticket, as well as being fun to do it can lead to some quite interesting insurance discounts, the best I've seen was from £2,600 down to £1,300

I have had some wierd quotes, especially putting the correct X spokes on an E34, when I had bought it with aftermarket 5 spokes.

Shop around, I was even refused cover from direct line etc, 44 year old, full no claims, advanced ticket etc etc.

I have found Chriss Knott, and Heritage to both be very good, both advertise with the club and offer double discounts, discount for BMWCC membership, and IAM membership.

Best Wishes

Nigel

My insurance for a 23 year old with 3 years NCB on a E28 525e Lux is 356 quid with no excess. Not bad I reckon, although that is TPFT - fully comp is approaching 500 quid. However, perhaps I should have the car independently valued and insured for this value, rather than the 3 pence the insurance company would try and give me for her.

My chevette is insured fully comp as it works out cheaper than third party. However, the excess is 250 and coveniently the car has been valued at 250. Crafty insurance company, the car is effectively worthless. I'll make sure to hit a new Merc SLR, or else crash headlong into the Mercedes dealer along the road. Bwahahaha.

I usually work on the basis, irrespective of age/cost of car, "can I afford to have it written off and get nothing back" if answer "no" insure comprehensive. You also get a few extras with comp which occasionally come in handy!IanT

I was only TPFT then so lesson learned even if it does cost a bit more. Need my car as I have to travel in the sticks at stupid hours 40 miles each day.

No, fortunately we were on the school run in my old 1979 Vauxhall Royale coupe, two cars in front of us stopped dead, we stopped, escort (uninsured) behind us never even braked(from about 30mph) and the van behind him also hit him in rear.

The huge rubber overiders on my chrome bumpers meant all I got was a big dent in the rear valance, took every panel out on front of escort, van took every rear panel out. this all included his front and rear number plates, so he refused to give police ID, suppose with his son injured and his car by far the worst for wear they let it go. £400 damage to mine (if new parts used) less as I asked for panel beaters to fix it (not many "new" parts around for that car in 2000! What a moron, allowing an 8 y/o to ride unbelted, and in an uninsured car to boot.

Did the payout ruin your NCB?

Yes, they will. Some prat did it to me, and to compound the situation he had his 8 yr old in front seat unrestrained who went through windscreen, police attended but chose not to record the incident!

My insurers set PI on it, but driver was local thug who everyone knew but no-one would talk about so my insurance paid for damage!   IanT

If an uninsured idiot writes your car off, and you have fully comp, will your insce co pay out, even though they cannot claim from the other drivers insce?

Philip,

After the wife wote off my car a few years ago and was left penniless for something that wasn't her fault, always go fully comp. OK its an old car, but the difference ws only £30 so said why not!

Very early E24s were assembled in full by Karmann.

BMW were unhappy about build-quality issues, so relegated Karmann to building the body shells only, and these were then shipped to BMW's production line at Dingolfing for the rest of the assembly process.

...so there was still Karmann input....

Much the same, but not completely.

E23s did not have Karmann input, so don't have the same type of rust issues that the E24s have.
