20. That was in 1992. Just took delivery of a 1985 Audi 90. 2-liter, 5-cylinders. Great sounds!

Fiat Ritmo (Strada) 105TC, '82, great engine, everything else was crap, especially the front chassis legs which had a tendency to crack for no good reason - made it interesting going around corners when the thing would "flex" once in a while and steer you a different way to the one you wanted to go. 

But it was black, had alloys and was a "hot hatch"!  Couldn't afford the 50% extra that the cheapest early rhd 4spd mk1 1600cc golf gti with a front end full of filler cost at the time.

Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93.

I was in my mid-twenties when I bought my first car,

B reg 1985 316 2 door coup, in zinobar red.
Body work was rotten, took ages to restore for mot but the engine was a pearler (except for the weber conversion)

wish I had some photos of it now for memories sake

B469 ORK (now resides in the great car park in the sky)
V reg Rustbucket Merc C220 Cdi estate
J Reg Saab 900i 16v
'63 Ford Anglia 105e deluxe
R reg Honda PC50 moped..

No BMW as yet...

Didn't have car till late 70's after bad smash on 750-4. Was unable to ride for a while so rescued a Ford Mk1 Cortina from a friends dad who intended scrapping it. Interesting car, column change auto, been owned for it's first decade by Ford as test vehicle. Concreted bottom of front wings where they flapped in front of door bottoms, fitted recon engine, had a lot of fun and sold it for what I paid! IanT

The memories,

At 20 I had a Mk11 RS2000 custom in black, complete with the fishnet head rests, and a few engine mods,

This was replaced with a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, again in black, if you think Bm's are tail happy in the wet you should try one of these, only one word would describe the handling, "evil" but sooooo much fun.

Wish I still had both of these

Oh to be 20 again, no worries apart from what to get for your car next, no morgage,

First Car was a 1991 H plate (H719RSC) 998cc Mini Mayfair which I learnt to drive in at 17 and still had it when I was 20.  Bought privately from a lady in Ayr.  19,000 miles FSH and 2800 in June 1995.  Ah the memories, knackered rear subframes, water pumps.....

Upgraded the 50 bhp Mini to a 204 bhp monster Vauxhall Senator CD 3.0i 24v 52,000 miles FSH and 2900 in June 2000 just before I turned 22.  Ah what a car, gave most things on the road a good run for their money.

August 2004  Senny had to go due to a unfixable fault but I did swap it for the current wheels my E39 523iA SE

Mini with its unmistakable charm, the looks and the dreaded tin worm and chain driven camshaft ohv engine!

Senny, my first rear drive, multi valve more than 4 pots car, again with chain drive to the camshafts, then the Beamer!

No nasty cam belts to go 'ping' in that lot!

Nice healthy stories of you lot starting out in Fords such as proper fords like the rear drive Escort, Cortinas and Granada Mk1s. You lot must be (no offence!) a bit older than me. That is old enough to have owned proper cars i.e. ones that are rear drive!  I didn't see any Capris though.  I wanted a 1600 Cortina as my first car.  I had read my dad Haynes Workshop Manual (the days when the manuals were actually quite good) instead of studying for my Standard grades at 16.

By the time I was old enough to drive in 1995 all the Cortinas had gone and I can remember Granada Mk1s only just.  My dad was a Ford Fan and told me about them.  He had Cortinas and the like but he always wanted one of the 6 cyl Granada Coupes.  The West Coast of Scotland was never very good at preserving cars! Even today you still see the odd Cortina and rear drive Escort but never ever any British Leyland cars!

Well I must admit, I went through cars like they were going out of fashion, but somehow a few types kept returning, so after my Mexico came a TR4a, a 2.8i Capri, my first BMW a 325iSE (had that for 3yrs) then a spate of Mini's including an excellent 1380 Cooper S, then a few 3.0S Capri's (including a Burton engined all steel 3.1) a 535iSE e28 then to a 2051.9GTI then back to the BMW's, culminating in my BMW M3 e36 and the current brace of Alpina's!

What a sad world we live in now.
When I was 20 back in '82 I used to run around in a Rover SDi 3500.. and drive the thing sideways everywhere. Dad had a nice 635csi and I used to get the keys to that quite often.. my first car in my own name was a Fiesta SuperSport when I was 21... nice car but not enough grunt.. that went after less than a year to be replaced by my beloved Manta.

Our Chris is now 20 and a brilliant young driver.. but there is no way we can put him behind the wheel of cars like that anymore.. cars may be cheap, but the insurance is a killer.

When I think back to all the 'classic' motors me and my mates used to knock about in and the way the roads were policed properly.. fuel was more affordable back then as well.

It seems to me that every car we as a family ever owned was never a duffer and each one of them would be collectable today.

.. there is nothing wrong with rose tinted spectacles.

You're all so young! 105e Anglia, grey plus undercoated replacement wing (never painted, didn't have any money). Reg no: 1277 MP what would that plate be worth today I wonder? Progressed to a rare 105e estate, then a mki 1500 Cortina (LGO 644D), then a series of company cars, Cortina's, Alpine's, Ital, Sierra 1.6 Ghia auto (one of the best cars I've had), then a plethera of BM's working at a delaership, the 525e was my favourite.

It was in silver. Reg. was B 766 TNG. Trouble was the 1994cc unit was tuned to give only 115bhp. So 9.5 secs to get to 60 was a bit slow.... Great 5-speed gearchange; throw was noticeably shorter than a BMW one. Reverse a bit erratic to engage - with my car, you had to let it creep forward first!

With the 136bhp 2144cc unit, more fun could have been had....but they were mostly quattros, so maintenance cost , instead of or

Large saucer or small saucer?

When the steering wheel on my old man's Mk.2 Cortina 1600E was vandalised, he replaced it with a very small Astrali wheel....

If we are going in order mine go like this

  1. 1966 Mini super deluxe LYN 422D. I upgraded the 850cc to a 998 cooper lump with a c/r straight cut box. White Balck roof.
  2. 1977 Fiat 131S Mirafiori 1600. TLN 963R A great car which eat 1600 fords and had a 5 speed box as well. In a Lovely Yellow!!
  3. The aforementioned 1977 Mk1 Ghia 3.0 Granada. PRK 787R are you still out there? White / Tan roof.
  4. The aforementioned 1979 Mk2 Ghia 2.8 Granada. ATF 910T Anyone know it? Statos Silver / Black roof
  5. The aforementioned 1983 Mk2 Ghia X 2.8i Granada. FKN 111Y a fully loaded motor without a doubt. In Glacier Blue.
  6. 1984 Saab 900 Turbo. A543 POT. Immaculate in Red but Crap.
  7. 1984 Opel Senator 3.0CDi A600 VGP. Very quick but trim kept breaking. In Silver with a hideos blue velour trim.
  8. 1985 Sierra XR4x4 2.8i in White. C229 NAU.
  9. 1985 Granada Scorpio C322 RRA in Jet Black. Another excellent big Ford.
  10. 1981 Escort 1.3L!!!!!!! TFG 1X In Gold. Well I had just bought a house!!!!!!! Sold the plate for 500, Only paid 450 for the car.
  11. 1989 Sierra 2.0i Ghia in Tasman Blue. F289 TFU The biggest pile of dogs dooings ever.
  12. 1986 Volvo 760 GLE estate. D120 PGN. In Met Red Tan Leather and all the toys. Bought for the loading space while doing the house up. Superb car, would have another.
  13. 1990 Celica 2.0GTI auto(!). Red G36 TEA. Auto was the reason I sold it.
  14. And then it started....1990 525iSE BMW in Alpine white with antracite trim. G876 SPN. Anyone know it.
  15. 1993 525iSE in Diamond Black with Silver leather, air con and s/r. L989 BPF. Sold it to a guy up the road and it's still mint now.
  16. 2000 523i SE with full factory Sport kit. In Biaritz Blue with Grey leather.

In 89 I bought a 1965 Herald 12/50 which over the next 11 years I restored and took best of show twice along with various other best in class etc before selling in 2004.

That was replaced by my 1989 F E30 325i convertible which I slowly getting up to scratch. Some of you should see this at some of the southern meets this year.

I had a 1984 E30 cream 320i 2 door coupe, but my first car was very embarrassing at the time but I wish now I still had it - 1981 1300 ford capri!!

Talking of sideways cars, my second car was a Ford Corsair 2000E. Loads of torque, snapped the back axle twice wheelspinning it outside mated houses in the early hours. OK in a straight line but crap at cornering. Too low geared for much over a ton. Engine was naffed when I had it, great if being tailgated, quick lift off throttle and instant fogbank while one floored it away! IanT
