Sorry, but there's one argument you've lost.

BMW 120iSe £20'270

Subaru Impreza WRX £19'797.

One is slow, ugly and plagued with warranty
problems. The other is probably one of the best
driving cars ever made and being Japanese, it just
works. Good resale value too. Yes, the 1 Series
handles okay but so does a Ford Focus and that car
doesn't pretend to be the 'Ultimate Driving Machine'.
The Impreza would chew up your sweet little 1
Series and spit it out in bits. As a car enthusiast and
not a badge snob, I would buy the Scooby knowing
that for twenty grand I'm driving something really
special.

Another £4000 and you could haver a Nissan 350Z
which just goes to show what an overpriced turd the
1 Series really is. In your case, BMW marketing has
really worked its magic.

Sorry, but the 1 Series is just a badge on a rather
ordinary car. More fool you, or as the spoof advert on
SniffPetrol says (the one with a BMW badge on a dog
turd) "You suckers will buy anything".

I think you're confusing me. It's not about how much a 1er costs compared to a Subaru. If I wanted a Subaru, I'd buy one. I enjoyed driving the 1er more. Me. I don't presume that my opinions are relevant for anyone else.

Unlike you.

Andyboy, this flame war you have fomented is almost as vitriolic as some of the sessions we used to have on the late 7 series register forum. some great spleen venting posts here guys.

chat boards are very boring if everyone agrees all the time.

Doive, one of my former E23 landfill "council estate" classics was blessed with an NI plate reading DAZ. the guy I bought it from was called Darren. The car had a good stereo and the NI plate. However, no money at all had been spent on boring stuff like brakes, servicing, tyres etc. Does anyone (outside of this forum of course) really think NI plates look cool?

andyboy, when you sold your collection of flash motors to invest in property, did you miss them at all, or not give a hoot? I guess you've owned so many cars over the years that nothing impresses you anymore?

I wasn't aware that the 1 series had any warranty problems!?

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. I know people who think the Impretza looks horrible.

Slow is relative. Compared to other 2.0 family hatches it isn't.

Not supprised at all that Hiabboy thinks Andy boy is the voice of reason biggrin1

Oh and I have no middle class guilt at all, I just thinks it's wrong to make cack handed judgements about people based on either their earnings or what they drive.

When I see a NI registered car in Scotland I am pleasantly surprised, don't see too many of them. I think its very tragic that people such as Darren should spend a small fortune on a number plate proudly displaying their abbreviated monicker, especially when it's Irish and it just looks pikey. My father wanted me to register my car in NI but I flatly refused on this very basis.

In terms of Irish personalised plates, the worst is yet to come I'm afraid chaps. The powers that be in County Fermanagh have chosen their new regional plate to be _IG 1234, so be prepared for the onslaught of numbers such as 'BIG', 'MIG' (for all the welders obviously) and 'WIG'. I think the BIG plate will be very popular with the chavs in a couple of years time. The DVLA should make them all non-transferrable on issue so the morons can't buy them all.

Just a quick observation - like a couple of the points expressed here TOTALLY OFF TOPIC.

If you knock a shed down that housed a load of rats, the rats will just move to the next shed and take up residence there.

Same as if a forum that is frequented by people with useless opinions, that dont help anyone else in any way closes down, they too move onto the next one .. ie. this one.

Shame isnt it.

You mean you don't like it when a conversation is a little bit random? I tend to drift when I talk to people, and when others in here are drifting too then we can't help but move off topic! I don't see it as a particularly bad thing, it often gives rise to several new topics that can be suitably drifted off in the fullness of time.

I'm also guessing from your comments that you object in some way to the newest members - well I'm a new member but I didn't come over from the 'other' forum, and I really can't see the problem. Its called a diverse membership. If everyone here conformed to the same opinions then every thread would go something like: 'New one series is nice'....'Yep'.....'I agree'.... and so on. Get used to people with different opinions, no matter how useless to you they are - some people find them amusing!

So, I hear some E36 drivers are giving us a bad reputation?

no Doive youve taken what im saying the wrong way ... off topic i have no problem with, I take most topics off topic ..

What I am getting at, and Im sorry if I didnt present this in a way which was easily understandable, is that you get the odd s... house that thinks they need to launch a personal attack on someone else, and base their opinion of someone on what they drive / how wealthy they appear to be.

Why would I object to new members, wouldnt be a forum then would it? as long as there not sh... housing on anyone, the more the merrier.

Praktisk,

the thread has gone a little off topic but then lots do. I do tend to go off on tangents myself as well as being a self confessed waffler. I also have a bit of a reputation for carrying a soap box under my arm. I must say though earlier on I got me a bit fired up by some of the posts which did me wonders in the gym later on.

As for people coming from other forums, I agree there do seem to be a few who's only purpose on here seams to be to wind people up and be offensive. There was a coment made about carpet bagging on a different thread in reference to people who don't give anything back to the forum. Well it strikes me that the person who made the coment and perhaps another person in particular don't seem to add anything at all.

A final thought, if you don't like BMWs, go and find another forum  biggrin1
