I never ever have problems sleeping. Never.  It is unknown.

Tonight though, something is very odd.

Went to bed as normal, wife already fast asleep.

Tried getting to sleep for a full hour - no can do.

Legs itching like hell, feet itching, stomach itching, hands itching - and I feel as if I have a temperature (feel very hot in myself) yet I don't have a temperature (checked).

Checked NHS Direct, nothing that properly describes it.

Put Sudafed on - still itching like hell. Really really fidgety too.

Problem.

It is 3.20am - I have to be up at 6.08am for a full days work.

No  sleep!   Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What can it be!!!!  This is driving me mad!

More to the point - I feel very alert - no signs of tiredness at all!  I feel as if I have just woken up after a good nights sleep!  This really is puzzling me something chronic!  This is just so not me!  I have never ever experienced anything like this.

Ate Sunday Dinner as normal, had some ice cream after it, then later atre half a bar of hazelnut type chocolate - but nothing I've not eaten before!

Weird!

Now it's 5.48am and I'm still awake.

Grrrr.  Not overly tired either.  This is going to hit me later in the day isn't it!

Aw well, time to get up (off my chair!) and have a shower and go to work I guess!

Maybe I'm developing insomnia.....oh god I hope not!

I also had insomnia last night although I know the reason, I had a big glass of coke before I went to bed, doh!! Since I don't drink tea or Coffee, the effect of caffine on my body is quite strong, hence I was up till about 2am. My allarm went off at 5:30 and I felt Ok although I know I'm going to be knackered by about 6 tonight.

On a serious note the itching sounds like you may have had a mild allergic reaction. I had a mild one first then a week or two later I had a very bad one. I came up all over in big itchy lumps and I turned bright red, vommitted and passed out. It was caused by something I ate, however my mam and brother have both had allergic reactions from certain brands of soap etc.

I also sometimes get a kind of restless squirmy feeling in my legs and arms which is very irritating and stops me sleeping but I have no idea what causes it.

The other possibillity is that you have been taking speed! Did you go to a rave earlier in the day? biggrin1

It's something called 'restless legs'. Apparently it happens to people as they get older....er, no offence or anything. My father suffers from it regularly and he gets up in the morning, absolutely knackered and tells me all about it. He says its as if his legs want to go for a walk all on their own, and an almost sore tingling starts in his legs and can spread up into his abdomen as you describe. When he moves it eases momentarily, but as soon as he stops it comes back, hence the name restless legs.

Often getting up and walking around will ease it. I regularly have sleepless nights, I can often be found pacing the streets of Edinburgh at 4.30 in the morning as I find a walk can make the pains disappear! try it and see how you go. Insomnia is a truly horrible thing, and nobody ever gives you any sympathy. 'Why can't you sleep?' they say. Grrr.

Ok - update.  Been offline all day because I got to work and then came away and went to hospital - something just wasn't right and I knew it.

It's a bit more serious than I first thought (although I knew something was wrong because I can always sleep without problem).

Nuffield (see it comes in useful Nigel!) were very swift with Abdominal scan, etc etc - it turns out to be liver related.  Extremely high Gamma GT count too.

I knew I had liver issues but they're much worse than I thought so I now have to go onto immediate non-fatty diet crap and all that.

Have to go back tomorrow.  I won't fill you in on all the details but basically it is seemingly quite serious and my lifestyle needs swift action to prevent my liver from any worse damage (I don't drink either!).

Not a very happy bunny.  Still bloody itchy too!

Ooh. That doesn't sound nice at all mate. Good thing you went in and got that looked at. I'm sure they know what to do to get you back to your old self. Its a scunner when its not alcohol related too - always annoys me in pubs and that when I see people getting tanked on pint after pint, safe in the knowledge that I can only have one....

Hope you're feeling better soon mate.
