how am i in a possition to comment on the e23 when i have one but have never driven it on a road? i must refrain from any comments on this car untill its on the road running. i like the look, the shape, driving position etc. the thing that also appeals to me is the lenght of the bonnet out front, the only car i had like this was the e type jag.i like a soft ride in a car so reading other peoples comments this looks like the case.im hoping within a month to have it running on the road.the car inside cabin also seems quiet with the engine running, whats it like on the open road chaps, any wind noise etc. ill find out soon. roll on the spring.

You'll be happy when you drive it Rob.
If you've got it, a lorry brought it.

I don't have one, and never have done, but I like the shape too.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of it when it's on the road though.

A very introspective thoughtful post Rob, whats brought this on?

Andyboy once said E23's were below par on all key areas for a luxury barge like ride comfort, quietness, handling, perf, mpg etc etc.

I am able to compare my E23 with the E28 and the E32. and Series III XJ6 for that matter.

like you i like the shape and the driving position. the range of drivers seat adjustments are superb. you can tailor exactly the driving position that suits you. the XJ6 classic shape are too cramped inside for my liking.

From my E23 brief drive last sunday i found the cabin very quiet, the ride very good, seat comfort excellent, 3.5 litre perf very good, mpg better than 528i. I really enjoyed my E23 drive. That makes me an old nutter to be sure, but I couldn't care less.

the only negative thing I have to say is that my E23 seemed a bit soft at the front end and I would love to treat it to new Boge shocks. the E28 & e32 definitely corner faster, but I would have expected that from their design briefs.

also with a sunroof fitted the front seat headroom in an E23 is only just adequate for a 6 footer. this was mentioned in the contemporary roadtests.

I would like to hear other peoples E23 driving comments please.

surely these cars are not as awful as Andyboy & co say?

A Granada Cosworth!  Thats brings back some memories.

I once had two Granada's. A horrid old 2.0 LX (old old shape, in a nasty white colour) was followed by a newer shape (the bubble shape) C-plated 2.0i LX in a nasty burgundy colour.

I spent £1000 on that car - trying to get it all sorted by a Ford dealer - and then I went and sold it and bought an XR2i of all things!

I remember it was a nice quiet car with quite a high spec though.

Cosworths were in very limited numbers weren't they?

Kickdown on the ZF 4 speed box should be very crisp on both part & full throttle. the optional EH box gives you the choice of economy or sporty modes, kickdown in sporty mode being even crisper I am told.

I found the 3.2 engine to be even smoother than the 3.5, so your low mileage 3.2 should be very smooth indeed, you old smoothie Rob.

you still see loads about,i still might get another one i sold it to a guy on the isle of skye, one of the best and fastest cars ive had, faster than the e type, when you kick down it throws you into the seat up to 150mph. its the only car i could kick down at over 100mph. brilliant engines,24v quad cams. the only reason i sold it was i went to fords for some spares once, they told me they only keep spares for ten years. the parts you then order then become obsolete. like the bmw rear wheel drive great fun also has a lsd diff.

the radio hole is std DIN as far as I know. All you will need is the cage that comes with the head unit.

BMW had a radio support bracket to add further support but that item is NLA. With a cage you shouldn't need an extra bracket.

your car might still have the BMW radio bracket - take a peek.

I can honestly rate the E23 as one of the best cars I have owned, it has the lot stylish looks, comfort & sheer power from that 3.5 litre six.

Plus a bit of exclusivity (if there is such a word!), as you don't see too many of them around these days.
