Do any of you have the means of (or know how to go about) checking a vehicles mileage?

I'm not sure how serious I am about the car yet so I don't want to shell out for an HPI check unless I have to. The car in question is a BMW for which I have the reg and chassis numbers. BMW UK told me the spec of the car but had no listed main dealer services at all to compare the mileage against. They put me in touch with the dealership who originally supplied it but they had nothing either.

Sounds a bit suspect which is a shame, but can anyone help?

If the car is plugged into a diagnostics machine it will reveal the true mileage

Unless it is very cheap I would avoid any BMW that has never been serviced at a main dealer. Why would someone buy a brand new car and then not take it back to the main dealer to get it serviced, for the first few years at least.

Whether they are crap or not isn't the point. Would you buy a brand new car and then imediately take it out of the dealer network? I wouldn't simply because it will have a negative effect on the resale value of the car. Not to mention the fact that it will make any warranty claims much easier.
