Topic: E30 Front discs Posted: 24-April-2003 at 19:54 |
I'm after a little bit of advice please gentlemen.
I'm getting a slight wobble through the steering at about 60-70 mph and under braking which I suspect is being caused by warped discs, though I haven't checked as yet. I've had the front wheels balanced which improved things a bit and being 17" are probably more sensitive to being out of balance anyway, but is there anything else worth checking when I have a look this weekend such as bearings, bushes etc?
If it does turn out to be the discs (after 2 years and over 34,000 miles they're probably due to be changed as they were on the car when I bought it!,)I'm considering upgrading them anyway and would welcome any suggestions/recommendations. I've heard good things about EBC discs and pads, has anybody got any experience with these? Could I use upgraded discs with standard pads or vice versa? The car does mainly motorway miles and the occasional cross country blast and am looking to possibly do a track day or two in the future.
Any advice would be much appreciated,
Cheers
Steve

Stick with OEM discs. Stock pads are good too. Pagid are good if you don't want to spend a fortune, EBC Greenstuff if you do.
The Greenstuff are very fade resistant for track use.
While your down there, have a quick look at the track rod ends and balljoints.
Have the replica Alpina's the right hub hole diameter.

I stuck on ATE Power discs on my 320i (from Euro Car Parts) and the difference between these and the standard discs was huge. Get some good pads while you are at it (greenstuff or similar).

I got the same ATE discs from Euro with standard pads on my 320i and it made a big difference to mine as well. The old disc on the near side was warped and it caused very juddery braking as well as pulling to one side.

The ATE discs have the advantage that when you put them on (possibly with new pads) you only need to brake about half a dozen times and they are bedded in - none of this driving carefully lark

b318isp,
The wheels are BK Racing Alpina replicas and came with spacers to centralise them on the hubs as there are eight stud holes to account for two different PCD's. Would this cause any problems?

Possibly. What size diameter are the spacer hubs? They must be 57.1mm.
One thing to try is to loosen the wheel bolts, lift the wheel off the ground with a jack and retighten the bolts bit by bit with the wheel up (you may need someone to press the brakes).
This may help make sure the wheel is centralised on the hub.

My e36 suffers with the same symptoms and I know it is caused by the spaces not centering the wheel completely. There are companies that do spaces that have a hublike extension to prevent this. I know Hamann do them for the e36 but I'm not sure who does the best ones for the e30.
