Topic: I need an E23 windscreen, Patrick??? Posted: 02-April-2005 at 07:57 |
Grrrrrrrrr, last Sun the leaking fuel hose. Today, on the A12 heard an almighty crack, then saw this very nasty two-headed monster chip at btm corner of screen.
Is this an MOT fail - drivers corner of screen
Does anyone have an E23 green tinted screen?

If it is the driver's direct line of vision, it will be a "fail". Being double-headed, it will be that much more noticeable.
I've had one (single crack) on the E24 to the extreme right of the screen, and the MoT testers have never had any problem with it.
Are Autoglass able to supply and fit a replacement for you?

philip its only a mot fail if its in your field of vision. not if its in bottom corner, autoglass should be able to fix these. cheaper than new winscreen.

Difficult to say. But you might want to err on the side of caution, and fit a replacement windscreen. Not funny if the damaged one cracks and crazes before going "bang" whilst you're driving.....

Phil
Best to get it seen to sharpish though, as it may crack if we suddenly have a sharp frost!

its really deep. there are bits of glass coming out of the centre of the chip. Would this have been a metal object from a vehicle rather than a road chipping? seems too much damage for something like grit.

philip if you take it to autoglass they will tell you if they can repair it. the windscreen consists of two layers of glass, with a vacuum in between, they inject a resin into the layers thus repairing the damage. the resin they use is made of glass so the repair will be invisible. this repair can only be done if the glass hasent started cracking.

...and even if they can't repair it, they should be able to source and fit an original-spec windscreen for you.

Sorry Phillip unless autoglass have signed up Paul Daniels ,that screen is history. With all the dead, and ailing e23s around i wouldn't have thought finding a used one would be a problem.

Phil, insist on an original BM part. Secondly, there may be a 'top tint' version available for not a lot more. i think they are a nice feature as well as being practical against low sun/glare.

Rob reckons my screen is repairable.
If not I will do as Patrick says. top tint sounds very tasty.

Just checked the ETK for windscreens in case mine is kaput.
2004 ETK has deleted all e23 glassware
2001 ETK lists choice of clear, bronze or green screens.
I will enquire tomorrow after the green one part # 51311847010
AG & I have previously discovered that items deleted from the ETK are in fact still available, eg E23 bonnet insulation pads.
BMW seem to not want to sell E23 bits

Hi Phil,
I work for Autoglass in Ireland, and as far as I know, if you have glass cover a screen costs about £50 and shouldn't affect your no claims discount ( it doesn't over here and its free ).
Stone chips can be repaired but are not cosmetically perfect, they are however guarenteed not to crack from that point. For best results get a repair done asap and never tuoch/rub/blow it, the less contamination the better.Even put a little tape over the chip to keep moisture out.
With regard to the second hand screen, unless you are badly stuck I wouldn't recomend it.Screens tend to get scratched very quickly from wipers and grit from the road, sometimes this isn't noticed until you look through a new one, also as they age water starts to work its way into the lamination severly weakening the screen ( this can be seen as a cloudy white area around the edge of the screen). Not too sure about this point, but it is a possibility with the age of the E23 you may find one with a toughened screen as opposed to a laminated screen, which at this stage would be dangerous as well as illegal.
Hope this helps, and by the way not trying to plug the company I work for, only mentioned them becuase someone else did.
