Can't beat the lines of an E9. The CSL was recently voted favourite BMW of all times. I have had four of them, the latest one a 3.2 left-hooker, which is nearly finished after 5 years of restoration. Most time spent on seraching the right parts.

Having owned and restored (rephrase that: restoration NEVER stops with an E9) my 2800CS for the last few years I agree that the sixes are nice, the M3's great but there is nothing like taking something from nothing to driving a head turner, no matter how slowly!! is good for the soul.

Stick to a good restored CS. The design is a lot older than the 6-series, but an M6 is not that much quicker than a LHD CSL. The CSL is rather fragile though, so for more regular use go for a CSi with 200 bhp and fuel injection. These are manual only, easier cruising with a CSA auto, but a bit slower. If you want to tune it a triple carb engine is easier than the Bosch D-jet.
Good luck with your search.

A reasonable one does pop up from time to time in the £5k to £10k range....

Thanks for the advice guys, I didn't end up getting it, maybe a blessing in disguise lol, these cars come and go, I'd be better served saving the and hopefully get a decent one, csl preferably.
I've been bitten by the cs bug, the cars look so sweet and are so rare, thats what appeals to me. Sure, there are lot of other faster and technically better cars out there, but there is something about the cs/ls.

Horsetan is right. Apart from a CSL, E9's with rust are very rarely worth the cost of restoration. I have seen many that are offered for sale over and over again at approx £ 1,500, when several paople in a row think that it will make an easy project and find that rust makes the cost of repairs prohibitive. It is then put up for sale again. A "nice M635CSi..." will cost currently a lot more than 10k though.

How much does a good cs go for these days? And how much do you reckon if this one was restored to a resonable standard would go for, by reasonable I mean, it drives, and it looks ok, condition C+?

Yes. Rust was invented for the CS Coupes which
although a superb looking car, were bodily a
complete bucket of s***
You have no idea how badly these things can rust,
how difficult they are to restore, what the parts cost.
Sadly, there is only one way to buy. You buy a perfect
restored car, rust proof it with waxoyl, garage it, don't
drive it in bad weather.
If however you are a very good welder (and I mean
VERY good) and the car isn't completely rotten, you
could have a go. The moment you need to spend
money on panels, forget it. The CS Coupes are still
not a valuable car

I reckon you should try and trace a former Forum participant who went under the ID "Quendil".
He took on an E9 restoration, and appeared to be doing quite well. £17,000 later, he threw in the towel....

do you reckon it will cost that much to fix up? and is in that bad a state? I spoke to the owner, and there are quite a few new panels on it, and its been "garaged" whilst its been stationary. 3.3 engine? triple carbs? It must roar dont ya think?
I reckon 1k to get an MOT, and then once it can drive, do the other work bit by bit, what do you reckon?

Like all the best public infrastructure projects, your E9 restoration is very likely to finish behind time and very much over budget once you've discovered the true extent of the rust....

Not very, so it will cost a bucket?
The triple carbs intrested me, i'm not sure how much faster it will make it, put off by the non-leather interior.
I better start saving before I start dreaming, these cars look so sweet though, and you hardly see any on the road. Ill start saving the pennies for the csl...
