My 1991 M5 Baby has started smokeing and we have decided to strip down the top end and change the valve stem seals and investigate the pistons etc etc. Now i checked out BMW prices for said job and to say the least it made me . so i have a mechanic buddy who said he would do it if i could find out how the cam chain tensioner works and whereabouts it is located and timing marks would be nice just to check we got them set right. help and advice greatly apreciated

thanks

Whilst I can't answer your question the Bentley manuals for the BM's seem to come highly reccomended, pretty sure that would cover all you need to know, hopefully one of the more experienced guys will be able to put you straight on that tho :)

And welcome to the forums btw, shame its under these circumstances ah

Mark.

Unfortunately the Bentley manual does not cover the M5 models....You might want to visit the M5 Board where I am sure you will find an answer to your questions...

well my local bmw dealer was of help...but the wrong kind of help. apparently they no longer carry the tech service manuals for that age of car.....its all on cd now on internet. they gave me the addy, which i clicked on too and it all looked promising untill i read the small print. as far as i can tell you have to be a business, and it cost you about 500 euros to register....and thats before you even start to access the tech manuals which they charge by the page . so im back to square one. i tried the web site that miles suggested but after registering and waiting five hours they still not activated my account so i cant post anything on thir forum .

so if anybody could still help me, i would be very greatfull

thanks

Welcome from a fellow Newbie-have you tried the small ads and lists of BMW specialists in the back of the 2 main glossy BMW mags at the newsagents, BMW Car & Total BMW? Don't know which part of the country you're in but they list specialists UK-wide.

Try and get hold of a copy of Total BMW April 2005 edition-they did an article on the E34 M5 as well as a large M-Power feature. You might still find a copy lurking at a newsagent, or just order a back edition. They've got lots of ads in and you may find a specialist you can speak to.

1 specialist I've seen reccommended is in Gravesend in Kent-Hartlake Specialist cars. They say they've worked on all BMW models, and are an M-Power specialist. Call them on: 01474 326626. It's run by Angelo DeVito and they have a website at: www.hartlake.com. Hope this helps.

thanks alot again to both nigel and redoctober, for helping out a man in distress. will try both suggestions tomorrow and hopefully will get somewhere. one other thing i could try is i found a website that i could download tech manual for amongst other bm's the M5. it was from america i think and it would cost £10 to download. the file is 349meg so i assume its got some info in it. if anyone has done anything like this before, could you let me know if it is a worth while thing to try?

once again, many thanks to the people who have given me advice.

glad i joined this forum .

Not trying to scare you or anything but whatever you have done to the engine isn't going to be cheap ! You could always buy a new engine from BMW for around £15k ?

lol thanks for that.....have only just bought the car....so the problem came with it. am pretty sure its the valve stem seals that have worn and i have all the bits to replace them, its just that my mechanic buddy works for citroen so is unfamiliar with where and how the cam chain tensioner works. as soon as i get that info we shall be away, as we have already part stripped the engine down. he does not want to do the tensioner the trial and error way cause that WILL cost me alot of money . the car only cost me £4k so im a bit wary of spending £15k for new engine..

so i am still searching for info/ diagrams on how and where the cam tensioner is and works.

life is a struggle, but i wont give in, i love the car tooo much!!!

Hey Zavy -

Welcome from yet another newbie !

Just to make a comment on the Bentley manual - they are useless anyway, I bought one and paid far too much for it from Amazon.  Turned out that US spec are not the same as Euro spec cars and it's nothing but a pain in the neck.

If you want I could get the details and instructions for you from the Bentley manual (even though the M5 engine isn't covered - it may be something similar).  Can fax them to you or whatever.  At the very least it may give you a rough ballpark idea what you're dealing with if you come up with nothing else.

not sure how the best way to get info between us? could you e-mail the info? if not i have got a fax machine so ether way would be great.

Just found this on the m5board, it might help :

"The S38 M5 Engine has timing marks on the camshafts just behind the 1st bearing cap on each cam, machined into a flared section. There are two marks/ slots on each cam, one of the marks will line up with a corresponding 'slot' moulded into the rear of the no.1 cam bearing cap, while the second mark will point towards the other camshaft. The crankshaft damper has an
O|T mark moulded into it, which will line up with a pointer at the 12 o'clock position on the lower chain cover just below the cast roundel mark. Ideally, a second pair of hands( fingers ??) will be needed to hold the chain upto the lower sprocket as tension on the leading side of the chainis taken up, otherwise a perfectly timed up top end will slip 1 tooth as the chain on the trailing edge falls round the lower sprocket. The main thing is ,take your time and be sure . Those valves get really expensive ..."

"Removing the old tensioner is rather easy, but you can't reach it without removing some parts. From underneath, the A/C pmp and the O2 pum sits in teh way and from above, one needs to remove the 'windscreen-flui reservoir'.
One needs a 17mm hex socket to remove the bolt that holds the diaphragm (3.6 only) and the tensioner-socket (both 3.6 and 3.8). The spring comes loose after which you can remove the tensioner-plug. Then, remove the tensioner-socket with a 32mm socket."

And some pictures of the tensioner :
