Hope someone can help on this one:

I need to de-activate the passenger airbag so that I can have an infant seat in the front passenger side.

the jag has a switch, but the BM & octavia don't. The little monster will need class and performance from an early age!!!

Does anyone have any tips on doing this?

Is it as simple as pulling the fuse and disconnecting the bag module that needs to be deactivated?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

Better off fitting in the back, much safer.
The topic has been brought up before a while ago, not sure where though.

Think the dealers can offer a service to disconect the airbag, but dont hold me to that, give 'em a ring.

Theres only one bag module for the main airbags,it sits under the rear seats.Plus it's the main module for firing any side impact sensor airbags.

If theres no switch in the car to switch it of then I think the only way would be for a dealer to switch off the passenger airbag, which they probably won't do for safety/legal reasons.Or have the bag itself removed which again alot/all of garages won't do.If theres a fuse you can pull, which I doubt, again you'll probably switch off all the bags.

I know it's a hassle but the easiest safest way would be put your kid in the back of the car.probably best place for him if the unthinkable happens and you have a crash.
Airbags ain't something you should go messing about with, you could do yourself a very bad injury and I'm not kidding.I've seen pics of people with horrendous burnsfrom in-advertant deployments,ie they went off when they shouldn't have.Granted they were yanks and their airbags are twice the size of european, not coz theyre all fat they just dont wear their seatbelts.

Try having a word with a dealer,it's probably the best place to start.

I am shocked you would even think of putting a child in the front.

It main be a pain in the rear end to put them in the back but at least you know the kid is safe.

thats interesting, because the midwife actually recommended putting the little one in the front passenger seat (airbag and seat design permitting)!

I have seen lots of others doing this in four doors?, and friends of mine whose other halves drive TT's, boxters etc. (admittedly no choice) all do this too.

???confused???

Hi Sleeper,

Since the seats are designed to be put in the front (rear facing) and are subject to safety testing for type approval then they must be ok. From the point of view of child care, it is easier when the driver is alone with the imfant to have him/her beside them. The most dangerous part of child seat fitment is that people fit them wrong or do not tighten the harness tightly enough.

It is possible for the dealer to re-code the SRS module so it does not know there is a bag in the left side but not all dealers will do this for you. I personally do not like this approach as if the bag is left connected there is a chance that it could go off. If it is disconnected though, I think that is ok.

Alan

You will also have to take into account that should an accident happen and the insurance company finds out it has been de-activated, the claim will be null and void!
We always put our children in the back, safe as houses really, very rarely did they travel in the front with mum/dad in the back!

Hmm, how does that work with the X-type switch then? Are you not allowed to use the switch?

Dads Audi is the same...

I don't think there should be a problem with that. The cars where there no switch the insurance companys might deem it as modifying the vehicle from manufacturers specifications.I could see them not paying out for not notifying them of the 'mod' like they would with other mods.

I thought I'd point it out as Insurance companies tend to find any item to get out of paying up, they may not pay if you disable the system, in the event of a personal injury claim? Worth looking into?

none taken!
When my two kids were in the small chair, the car I had didn't have an airbag, so the situation was/is different.
Bit of a dillema really, as you get advised to do one thing, then another.
I think a visit to the dealers to sort out a few answers is on the cards, they may say, 'yep we do it all the time', and sort it for you, or inform you that they are not able to do this.
