Been away for a few days, came back to the heated:-
"buy one get one free Polaris E23 offer ", and just wondered why we do not see more e32/e38 posts? Other 7 boards have more of these than e23 and I am guessing that there are more BMWCC 7 series members with these models than E23's, so where are they? |

It does appear that the e32 owner (and e38 come to think of it) don't tend to post much on the boards. Maybe it's because e32 is becoming the landfill car, as people can't be bothered with the e23 and the e38 is still out of reach for the average car owning bod?
So if their e32 goes wrong, they throw it away as they bought it cheap! So don't bother fixing or sorting out the odd issue. I watched Phils e23 on Sunday whilst he was behind me, and it still in my eyes looks menacing on the road, nice a wide, lowish stance, looks good! |

thats funny AG, 'cos I was watching your Zinnobar E28 ahead of me in the convoy and it looked really good. E28's, especially your Alpina'd example, still look so good on the road. these older Beemers do make the modern average rep mobile seem very bland and shapeless??? long live "landfill" |

The 7 series forums (both of them) are extremely active so there's little need for another board, even if it is an 'official' (of sorts) BMW board. The E32 is by far the most common model on these other boards and few people consider them to be landfill just yet. Shame on you AG for suggesting it The 38 is becoming very cheap to buy and many 32 owners would probably make the jump when their car does evetually become uneconomic. That's a long way away though... |

no offence meant and not dissing the abilities of the e32 at all, it's just a comparison really Chas. So many e32's about, and getting cheaper by the week that it seems easier to many to buy them, then when they go wrong to bin them and buy another! I have a few on the register now, but the e38 is starting to out do the others in terms of numbers.

you're so right there AG. I've recently treated my e32 to a new OE quality exhaust and had the instrument cluster repaired, headlamp wiring fault fixed etc. for the money I've spent, like AG points out, I could have bought a whole e32 off fleabay. thats a reflection of how low valued old 7 series BM's are. the market, for whatever reason, just does not want them. old S class Mercs seem to hold up better on price & market demand.

None taken Andrew I must say that I find it bizzare when people talk about not repairing a car because the repair cost is more than the car is worth. The fact is, cars cost money to keep on the road regardless of their value. An expensive car costs more because there's also depreciation to worry about. And servicing an expensive car doesn't increase it's value (it just stops it depreciating so quickly!). I'd be happy to spend £1,000 a year keeping my E32 maintained because I know that an E38/39/65 would cost just as much to service. So what if the car's only worth £500? The fact is I get much cheaper and more individual - therefore more satisfying - motoring. Having an E36 and as a daily runaround helps too |

you could buy the Alpina suspension seperatley, but at a cost, something like £1600 for the kit plus £4k for the wheels at the time!
I've heard that the 2.8 although a good engine, is a bit of a sluggish thing in an e38. There was a 735i with all the sport options on there a week or so ago, that looked real fine, but at an £8k starting figure it attracted no bids. |

A lot of BM's out there with the large Alpina chrome script badges on the bootlid. how many of them have any Alpina bits other than the badge? sounds like AG just 'fessed up to tracking E38 prices

I quite agree, I prefer cars from late 70's to mid 80's but thats my choice. Running costs may be a little more than a fuel efficient 21st century matchbox, but they are often as well or better equipped, more individual and I get a lot of pleasure out of them! |

Personally I find the older models much more pleasing to the eye. They may not always have the high performance of the latest cars on the road and they may be relatively expensive to run and care for but at least they have curves and a style to them, unlike the jelly-mould cars being chucked out of the production lines now. The BMW 1 series looks suspiciously like a Mazda and a Vauxhall..no style whatsoever.
Bring back the old cars, at least you knew what they were when you saw them and they did have that little bit of individuality about them. |

i find running a e23 a lot more enjoyable as the car is different to the norm.i also think that they can be more reliable less to go wrong. simple engineering etc. built like tanks.

I just had this low point in the afternoon and I found myself looking at an e38 (yikes) but after a a cup of tea, all was back to normal!
As a rule, I prefer the styling of the old car as well, seem to have a lot of character that newer cars lack |

none of them really, a few owners think that because they have Alpina styling, their car is in fact an Alpina, & get mightily miffed when you tell them otherwise. |

Very few newer models by any of the manufacturers have character nowadays which I think is a shame. BMW's used to have very stylish cars..the old 5, 6 and 7 series were unmistakeable when seen on the road. The 'sharknose' was their signature, now a thing of the past sadly. Although some change is a good thing in the technology department, loss of individuality in the styling of cars is a very bad thing imho. But then I'm of the 'old school' and I prefer the old looks of cars and can't see why they have to be changed into jelly-moulds. Edited by Goldryder |

And when they do go wrong it doesn't take a mainframe computer and half a dozen technicians to fix it, you can usually get then running well enough to get home at least! |
