Don't think that's the size - mine were 240/45 415.

Might be 220/45 390 ?  I'll check in my handbook tonight.

Honestly tho' he'd be far better off getting some second hand wheels from a 5, 7 or 8 series. He could get the lot for the price of a set of metrics. Ride, grip & wear all improve.  Keep the metrics for shows etc.

OK, for the metric maniacs (me included), it's:

220/55 R or VR 390 (for the 165TR390 alloys, equivalent to 15.3 inches diameter)

or

240/45 VR 415 (for the 195TR415 alloys, equivalent to 16.3 inches diameter)

Don't get metrics they are awfull. You don't notice how bad they are untill you go to imperials.

You should be able to get a set of 4 second hand wheels for between £200 - £500 depending on what you go for and usually they come with usable tyres.

For example my 16" Alpina's i got on ebay with part worn tyres and i got 5000 miles out of the rears and 10000 out of the fronts. They cost me £500 including postage.

There are good deals out there and metrics are not one of them at about £150 - £250 per tyre.

I have an assortment of new unused michelin 220 55 390 tyres on new original rims , also some good  used tyres.  I 've also got a set of 15" X spokes with decent 225 60 15s. If interested pm me.

Hiabboy - you have pm

Everyone else - many thanks for your input, all comments very gratefully received and digested

Am with you all on the imperial conversion and we've done this on our M6 but in this case my mate just wants tyres and his very low annual mileage means that investing in wheels and so forth is not what he wants to do....

I have to agree (100%) ....

In Italy, for our stupid laws i can put only what is written on the car papers: 220/55 vr 390 and 205/70 vR14. As I got the car with TRX ,I use that awfull stuff till I have tread on tyres, then I will go straight to Fulda Carat Assuro 205/70 VR14(I still found 4 20 spoke alloys from a bmw Junkyard), I tested a car with those tyres and the roadholding is a lot bigger than with TRX(If you think that my TRX are new, You could understand the sensible difference...

Hope this helps

If you can find metric tyres to buy at all, as well as being rubbish they will be a lot of money; hence the eminently sensible suggestion made by others of getting new wheels and tyres.

The PO of my 6er bought new 15" wheels and tyres for less than the price of three new metric tyres.

A set of used E34 15" BBS wheels and tyres is going to be about 200 quid or so; about the price of a new michelin TRX if you can find one.

Ivan has bought used TRX tyres on e-bay etc and this might be OK for limited mileage use in good weather. However wet grip on a ten-year old michelin tyre is usually non-existent- I've had to bin Michelins when only half worn because the lack of grip made driving downright dangerous.

cheers

So you can't use an aftermarket alloy wheel and change the tyres to suit? I didn't realise it was that stringent over there!

I can use 14 " alloys+ 205/70 VRtyres or TRX 390 Alloys and 220/55Tyres ( or 220/55 390 M+S in winter, but this makes me not  happier...)....

In Italy Tyres rules were restricted after Young people had big accidents using not allowed tyres on the cars( 99% of accident casualties were young people driving  supercharged Renault 5 GT Turbo, peugeot 205 GTI, Clio 16V or Clio Williams, Opel Corsa GSi or Astra-perhaps in GB Opel is on the market with "Vauxhall" brand-), and the insurance company did not pay, whether they where right or wrong in the car accident , or if they had a life insurance....They only pay if the car is stock....If You are stopped by a policeman with different tyres from car-papers, they retire Your car-paper, You have to pay  from 300 to 1250 euros , You have to come back to original tyres and pass a sort of MoT, only to prove that You have the right tyres now.....

Then, the fact to live  in North Italy ( South-Italy police is more like as the famigerate "Pizza-mandolino-mafia-spaghett-Napoli&Pavarotti style.....") gives me no chance to have an Illegal spec car...
