Door handle mechanism on e36

   Folks
Mrs D's 316i was in for NCT test this morning (MOT equivalent).  They picked up on an intermittently non functioning external rear door handle.  It has always been stiff and sometimes doesn't open the door.  Its probably just through lack of use.
I'm guessing that it needs some minor adjustment and greasing but does anyone have any hints or tips or tricks to restore it to full working order.  
The handle on the other rear door probably needs greasing as well, but works fine to open the door.
Help appreciated!
