Telling fibs on insurance applications?

An RAC survey has reported that 1 in 10 people tells a fib when applying for car insurance.

Have you ever told a little white lie on the application, if so, what did you fib about?

Insurance is often very expensive and I, for one, have not and would not tell a fib just to try and reduce the premium. Its like the article says, a false economy and anyone who does tell fibs is asking for trouble in the event of a claim.

Just not worth the hassle but obviously there are people who do it.

As Owenw says, any excuse and they'll weasel out of paying so it ain't worth telling porkies. having been rear ended by an uninsured driver I agree about penalties, the dork who slammed me got hit in rear by a van at same time, mangling front and rear number plates, after which he refused to give a name or address to drivers or attending police who let him go. Then they wonder why people try it on!

Never needed to - the 'little fibs' don't know much off the premium anyway. I got quotes for keeping my car in a locked garage, on the drive, and on the street, and the difference amounted to less than 5% between the 3 (�50 in my case).

The same went for limited mileage policies - if I limited my mileage to 10,000 miles then I only saved �50 over having a 20,000 mile limit, and only another �25 for an unlimited mileage policy.

This & last year I went with Liverpool Victoria and went for the full package, business use, social & domestic use, commuting, unlimited mileage, parked on the road in Liverpool and it still worked out less than �1000.

�1000 sounds a lot, but when you consider the cheapest I could find 2 years ago was �1400 (and I tried about 50 companies), and I have had a �3k claim since then, it was a bargain.

It's just not worth the risk to someone who has a lot more than �50 to lose in the long run. Not that the guy who came to assess my damage even looked at the mileage, or ask where it was parked, etc. He didn't even check out the actual damage, just wanted me to lift the bonnet for a suspension damage claim?!?!?!

Ok so you lot have never told a small lie! Are you sure? How many people garage the car every night when they speak to the insurance company but in reality don't always bother? This kind of lie is very common, in fact a mate of mine admitted to it the other day.

It can't be compared to driving without insurance.

I have told a lie or two. When I was younger I failed to disclose modifications I had made to a car to my insurer. Foolish I know and I wouldn't dream of it know, unless it was undetectable, like an reprogrammed ECU.

Also I had my insurance cancelled once. I had been involved in two own fault accidents in my first year of driving. A couple of years later someone decided to pull out in front of me and I was unable to avoid a collision. My insurer informed me that they would process my claim against the other driver but would have to cancel my policy with them because until it was determined who was at fault I had in effect three own fault accidents in the last 5 years. This was the icing on the cake. Not only had some fool smashed my car up, my insurance also went up, although only in the short term.

A year or so later when I changed companies I was asked if I had ever had an insurance policy cancelled, to which I replied no. Not deliberately, it just didn't occur to me at the time. I thought they meant because of loss of license or something like that. It wasn't untill years later that I realised that it applied to my situation as well. Still I got away with it and haven't had another crash since, touch wood!

'Tis up to you, I doubt there would be much of an increase in premium for the extra couple of thousand miles. Probably be to your advantage to have a higher annual limit or just go for unlimited, depending on your age, driving record and NCB.

I knew of a bloke who put on his application for insurance that he had a 2.0 litre Sierra. He pranged it one day and a mate of mine asked me to go retrieve it for insurance purposes. Got to where it was and stood there for a few mins wondering why it looked odd. Seemed the pillock had insured it as a 2.0 litre cos he couldn't afford to insure it as it was....a Sierra XR4x4i.

He was not a happy bunny when he was nicked for having no insurance.

Silly pillock had removed the whale tail but you only had to take a peek under the bonnet and know that a V6 engine isn't the same as an inline 4.

Dozy so'n'so.
