ive finally changed the tensioner (the quick and easy if a little dodgy way) un fortunately, it hasnt resolved the ticking noise tthough.

anyway, just bolting the old one off and the new one on then running the engine for 20-30 seconds until the tensioner extends worked without damage to the engine.

Hey MB, can I just ask did you change the tensioner for an E46 one or the standard E30 one? I seem to remember reading somewhere that this was a recommended upgrade but that might have just been for M3s.

i didnt know about that, i changed it for a standard e30 one. even though it hasnt stopped the noise ive been told it would need doing eventually anyway, and it only cost 17 quid and 5 minutes of my time.

The E36 M3 tensioner is the recommended replacement for the E30 M3 tensioner.
