oops, wrong bit. Now I've removed the cover plate and having struggled for a while have given up. This has got to be the most impossible job I have ever come across ...  now I remember why I didnt replace the bl***y thing last time.

Changing that evaporator will be a lot more difficult belive me, plus the cost ,made even more painfull knowing that its all because you didn`t put the filter back in.

Andy,

Do all E34's have them or just those with air con? I'm wondering whether mine needs changing (if it has one) as when the blower is full on it doesn't feel that strong and although the air con feels cold, doesn't feel ice cold (may need recharging).

Hi paul ,as far as i know all e34`s have these filters ,and if blocked it will reduce air flow , if you want to have ago and have any probs just pm me your number and i`ll talk you through it.

Ill never understand why owners do things like that, you do know that the aircon evoporator sit right behind that filter (a very fine fined matrix) when i took my old filter out it was full of crap inc very small grit, with out that filter in place all that crap would of hit that evoporator £££££ all for the sake of putting a filter back, remember the old saying ,if a jobs worth doing its worth doing properley

The one i brought was a genuine bmw item (two piece) i had so much trouble getting the old one out, there was no way i was going to try a non genuine part.

As for the odour mine has completely gone, but then i did completely gut the inside of my car and clean every thing before i put it all back in,hope all goes well for you Dave

If that is what one looks like that is only 18 months old, i wonder what they look like if there never changed?

That is a most revealing photo there Andy!

The previous owner of our E34 520i was a smoker, so I'm guessing just by changing the filter the nicotine odour will be greatly reduced!
I will also be taking a picture of the one that comes out of our car, as the airflow through the vents is very very poor - so I reckon it will be even more blocked than yours!

I've also got an upholstery/fabric cleaner & will be scrubbing the headlining etc to try & eradicate nicotine odour - cleaning the ashtray made a big difference.......

I actually bought two pollen filters, one from GSF & one from BMW.
The guy at the aircon place said that BMW filters definitely fit, but he's had some problems with non-OE ones in the past.
So I'll compare the two & let him choose which one he wants to fit.
I was going to return the other, but as long as he gives a thumbs up to both, I may as well keep the second one if your 18month old filter looks that bad already - I guess I'll be needing to change it again in the near future anyway!
