Guys,
I have a LARGE quantity of 10/40 Semi, in my garage somewhere and probably will have access to the stuff on a regular basis (i.e can probably swipe some when my service is due). Question is, can I use this safely in my TDS SE?

This is obviously far removed from the advice of "5w-40 full synthetic", but is it passable? the motor has done 100K miles, the last 60K or so miles seem to have been done on 10-40 Semi every 3-5K miles. Just want to see who else uses this spec and finds no difference.

Hi Udhi,

Although the advice is 5w-40, I use Chevron 10W-40 in mine.  I'm not sure if it's Semi or full synthetic, but I use it for three reasons:-

a) I change the oil & Filter every 5K, and do mainly motorway miles (hence not many start / stop journeys)

b) I figure that the engine internals will outlast the ancilleries, and the body of the car by a factor of at least two anyway.

c) 20 litres of Chevron 5w-40 costs me £23.50.  4.5 litres of 5w-40 Duckhams or similar will cost me £20 by itself!

So you takes your chance!

PS - Mines done 117k, doesn't smoke, still pulls like a train, and returns an average 43mpg!

BM's gone, but maybe only temporary!
