New BMW owner that is.

Went from one German marque to another, and must say this one is a lot more refined.

I'm in Waltham Abbey, Essex.

And I hope you won't mind a few questions once I've introduced myself.

Good to meet you all, and I noticed the Meet topic for the Halfway House on the 127. Just avoid the last Sunday of each month, it gets a bit crowded with my old club.

Another new one!

There must be more BMW's in the South East now than in Germany!

Welcome, and at least I don't feel like the new boy any more!

Ta for the welcome gents.

Just a quick question now - Haynes don't appear to make a manual for my 96 Compact, does anyone know where I can source one?

Ooh, and another.... Timing belt or chain on it?

316i - and I'm confused about all the E numbers, I thought that's what we had put in our food, but I'm thinking it's the E36?

E36, the propper one
Yours will be the 8 valve, not sure on engine model (M40?)

Welcome to the club, and nice choice in car - though I may be a bit biased .

Have a look here, it's a usefull site for the compact - mainly ti's but could be of use to you.

'Proper' E36!?! lol!

I think the compact is E36/6 and yep, a 316i should be M40.

Some are chains, some are belts, having never had one I hope someone else can specify...

Ta lads.

Better check with a Main Dealer 'bout the timing chain / belt I suppose.

It's done just under 53,000 so if it is a belt it needs a change.

Jonesy - nice area you live in, never gone through slow enough to look properly....

if tre gets a meet going, would you be in on a convoy over?

The compact is an E36/5 (I think the E36/6 is the Z3)

I may be wrong but I think it uses a chain.

How about some pics?
