As I got a new radiator for my E30 318iS, I decided to also replace the radiator cap. The original one has a 140bar rating(yellow insert in cap), but the one I ordered based on the part number in the ETK has a 200bar rating(black insert in cap).
Which is the correct one to use for the 318iS? I know that my old 316i had the 140bar rating one. Thanks, Kevin. |

Thanks Brendan,
I would have thought it to be the safer one. I need to double check the part number on the car in case there was a mistake. |

Hi Lads,
Something wrong here, 140 bar is about 2000psi.!! A coolant leak at that pressure would cut the front off the car I think it is normally in the region of 12 to 14 psi. Cheers Alan |

I am thinking it is either 1.4 bar or 2.0 bar, and YES 140 bar is 1960 psi so the front of the car would not take this, or your face. I have recently bought a new rad cap and GSF sorted me the right one for my car, only gave them the engine make and reg number, think it only came to 8 quid. Edited by andyt323i |

To avoid confusion I would order this from the Stealer. That way you can be sure that the right one is obtained. I would hazard a guess that the IS will use the 2.0 bar cap and seems to be borne out by the OEM parts list info. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AF92&mospi d=47256&btnr=17_0099&hg=17&fg=05 Rob

Yes, 140psi is a little less than 10 Bar.

Got my units wrong, the cap reads '140' so this must be 140 kPa which is equal to 1.4bar.

IMO I would do a confirmation on whether it should be the 1.4 or 2.0 bar relief cap. The OEM spec, as above, is definately the 2.0 bar cap foir the IS so the one you have may have been replaced in the past, incorrectly. If you use the RealOEM site and input your chassis number at the first page, it will give you your required spec as it came from the factory. Rob |
