Nearly there with the old girl now. Replacement ABS sensor fitted along with new f/discs. CC fault traced to a 'wire'. I'm told this has now got the OBC road data up and running too. Hope to collect her tomorrow morning and will do my best (Phil) to shoot a few pics for you to post up.

Andrew, we are getting near a full missive - will it get published?!

Boge gas struts around £35 mail order. £90 from a dealer. Not often I say buy OE, but that's a big difference. Be careful on springs though, some of these muppet places supply 'one size fits all'. I am guessing your car has a/c so should have uprated springs.

Don't know poly bushes. Lowered springs = chavsville!

Is yours a 735? BM changed from hydraulic dampers to gas around 1984, but looks like only on the 735. The e23 came in for ride critism from the Press so that could have been a response for their flagship model.

front coil springs for an A/C car are £47 + vat each from BMW. ECP sell cheapies for £18 each. like Patrick says I would go for gen BM.

I am going to Lind BMW tmorrow to pick up all the bits I need to change the front shockers. upper & lower damper pads, spacers etc. all bits still available from Germany, nae bother. I got a pair of Boge OE spec shox off ebay for a few quid, a bargain.

VJ is too soft & wallowy up front - that will never do

Mark, did you check with your local ECP or GSF re susp & steering arms, as they can supply a brand called Lemforder which seems good quality.

Mark, a set of lowered front springs will do wonders for the look of the car, nd will make it a bit sportier to use to. Don't go too low though, maybe 25mm?

Patrick, get the details to me, and I'll get it in the mag.

I think Mark's ordered them all from BMW already

please save the arms for ebay or nutters here Rob

you could offer a car set of upper & lower Track Control Arms as one auction lot. I will bid bundles of spondulicks

what other susp/steering links & arms can you remove before you frag the shell?

Picked the old girl up yesterday.

One of the reasons for her going back in was steering vibration. Wheels have been balanced and re-balanced. Done again and on the car. Garage believed replacing discs was the answer. So genuine discs and new pads fitted. The vibration is still there, though it's different, but it really bugs me. Garage acknowledged from their road test that it 'flutters' and they think the tyres could be out of true. Now that may be, as the car stood for months and months.

Any ideas? Can you adjust the pre-load on the steering box?

CC now working and she looks blooming good. Phil, standby for pics which I took yesterday - just need one of my kids to help me upload and maybe reduce the res to make the files smaller. Is 72 dpi good enough?

Oh, a/c would not come out of the facia vents on 'bi'level' or 'auto'. 'Int air' remained lit. Was getting airflow to the windscreen. However, if I defeatd the push buttons by causing them all to be out got a flow of reasonably cold air out of the facia vents. Any ideas on getting the a/c right?

The old girl has soaked up a heap of money, my only consulation is that:-

a) she has been in store for a long time so some of this stuff is just through lack of use. If you have a classic or second car make sure you run it up very 2 weeks IMHO.

b) She is 20 years old and 157K so some of this stuff is wear 'n tear.

c) Some of this stuff is also servicing related, like the discs/pads.

d) The money spent is not dis-similar to the probable depreciation had I bought a 'newish' 7.

e) the buzz out of driving a classic compared to a wind tunnel clone.

Our son (24) thinks I've lost the plot or maybe, he sees his inheritance going down the drain. He's got a 2003 Mazda 6 2lt diesel (really quiet BTW and quick) with a/c and neat bodykit. He says; 'Dad, I get in it and everything works just as it should'. Mmmmm, now there's a thought .....................

1980s BM’s are renowned for vibes at certain speeds. Some owners tear their cars apart, renewing everything from brakes to track control arms to steering arms, bushes, joints etc etc, and still the vibes are there. Apparently, every steering & suspension component incl rims & tyres must be spot on to exorcise the vibes. Also the car must not have any damage from accidents which may have bent things on one side. My ’85 735i has steering vibes at around 55 to 65 mph. I will have the front wheels re-balanced (again!). The car already has new brakes all round, disks & pads.

Are your vibes all in steering wheel, or coming through the whole car?

How much were the disks & pads? I just bought OE spec ATE front disks & pads from ECP. With free shipping too. Disks were £25 each, pads around £16 a set.

The steering pre-load can be adjusted. BMW dealer can do this easily if needs be.

Pics to e28philip@yahoo.co.uk please.

The guys on E23 bimmerboard will sort your A/C gremlins if you post a query there.

Money spent on a classic is money well spent if you enjoy owning/driving the end result.

I have spent ludicrous sums on my fleet of wrecks, enough to get an E38 735i, but I don’t want or need one. After much reflection on this subject, I still stick to my old heaps. Sad deviant indeed.

its in the tyres, swop the backs to the front, if this helps a little then get shot of the tyres and buy new as the tyres will have FLAT spots.  also check if youve had your brake fluid changed in the last year as old brake fluid will give the same symtems.
