Right my 88 735 is still overheating so it's got to go ASAP.

What bits are most commonly wanted from scrappys?

Always worth a try. i began to think mine had eaten its head gasket, as it kept losing water, with no evidence of leaks. To cut a long story short, the pressure cap was n.f.g, just old+ tired-like me!

Nigh on new cap and rad from the previous owner.

Just stuck another HG on it, suspect I've ballsed it up somehow, compression's a bit low on 1 and 5 (only ones I've tested) barely hit 150psi on a warmish engine.

Strange because it idled for 20-25 minutes after the gasket change OK, went twice round the block and it started overheating again, might be the fan yet again.

Not sure I can be bothered messing about with it anymore to be honest sick of chasing my tail and driving herself's fiesta.

Could be as it idled OK for 20 odd minutes on it's first start after the HG, pal felt the top hose it was seriously hot, but that could have been conduction.

New stat from halfrauds, couldn't get the old one out of the stat housing, probably run it without the stat for a bit, could be a sticky stat, had one of those before, but that caused random spiking.

I'll have a play with it on friday as I'm on holiday, if it doesn't come good it'll get squished and I'll take piccys so I don't forget to stop buying broken toys.

Been there, done that trick for years, but it doesn't fix the problem does it?

That's just a get you home tactic

If it doesn't come good by Friday night it'll get stripped and probably squished by monday morning.

If you want bits best get your orders in :)

Its a get you home trick  But if it works it also tells you that the engine is OK and running fine and that you have a non working fan or blocked rad and your using the other fan to cool the car. witch the main rad should be doing.

Your not too far from me the LPG may be good for me if you get that far. give the old girl a chance

That's on the long(ish) list of things to look at.

LPG kit's going onto my 820, I'm not silly.

Wouldn't have bought it without LPG.

20K a year @17 to the gallon it'd have to be mind numbingly fast to justify that level running costs and it's a far from quick.

Right list of most wanted bits off an 88 735 with 160 odd K on the clock?

Non aircon usual broken sword, newish rad, new stat from halfrauds, good alloy wheels and tyres, gearbox just had a new filter and fluid change.

Has to go before the end of the month so I can turn in the tax.

trouble is that there are quite a few e32's around now at 'cheap' prices, so if they break its easy to throw away and buy another?

Won't be buying another one if these, XJ40 4 litre next time out, when I've got some cash.

Could pressure test and skim the old head and screw it back together again but I don't like it enough to do that.

Wheels, part no 82119409636 with good tyres, haven't checked the spare, knowing the previous owner that'll be good too.

Couple of bits are already taken.

I hope you've got a lot of cash then...  You'll be back to the E32 once you've experienced the best of British

I have to admit that the XJ40's I've come across do seem to be in need of work and don't appear to have faired the years well. Don't like to diss 'other' cars and I am a fan of Jaguar, but running them does appear to be rather expensive!

Yeah right just as many faults on Jags as Beemers if you ignore the bodywork problems or get one without the shedlike bodywork.

Can't get over the stupid front suspension and steering design on E32's absolute joke of poor design.

If I don't get on well with Jags I'll go back to 800's and have a relatively quiet life.

I do the work on my car's myself, I only go to garages for gearbox rebuilds as I don't have the patience or stuff that requires a flame axe.

I was a Jag nut for many years owning various ailing rust buckets like Ser II & III XJ6's and a V12 XJS. the XJ40 never seemed as appealing as the old shape cars and I never got into them. I have been led to believe that the post Ford takeover XJ40's are decent cars, thats 1991 to 1994 models. Ford taught Jaguar how to build good cars, thats what some people say anyway.

Is it true that Ford tried to buy BL around 1986 but were rebuffed as Thatcher Govt wanted British ownership, for purely political reasons.
