Mark
How about getting a quote to see how much it would be to refurb your original set?
Take it to a french polisher and see what they say! (That's the route I'll be doing with mine)

DIY French polish is loads cheaper than a trim kit, do the job over a couple of evenings.

Bought some French polish to do mine, won't be using it now though...

how is this done, do you have to remove the top coating (the lacquer) and then repolish and re-seal?

Pretty much, I did find a E23 site with pictures, link must be on my other machine.

Try these:

http://www.e38.org/e23/index.php?sort=1

http://www.firstfives.org/faq/woodtrim_refinish/paneling.htm l

In your case I'd say remove all the trim, you'd need a professional to get them to match and he'd want the panels to match them up.

Use a laquer remover, rub back gently with very light grade abrasive.

Then follow instructions on Tin of French polish, I went down to BnQ and read the back of a few tins, French polish will re-seal the wood.

Sounds to me that there might be a market for craftsman-made replica wood trim parts

the timber on mine are apparently options from Alpina, and they are bespoke for the car, totally different to others I have seen, so I can't just go and get another set, however I think I'll take them all off, and get them sorted when the car is in the body shop!

Mark - I have several items of E23 wood trim - you are welcome to have 'em free for the RB - you could practice your refurb skills on them. see also the bimmerboard where David C has posted an excellent guide to refurbing the wood gear shifter trim.

AG - the more stripping down of trim you do before the car goes into the bodyshop, the better. doing this will save on labour cost $$$$$.

I sent VJ in the workshop will no door cards as the window motors required repair. also no back seat or pass seat. you can refurb bits better when they're in your dining room

the SS is away until its all fixed!

starting will a full service with all new filters, V belts, brakes & fluids. ABS sensors. Then a new MOT. Then repairs to all the inop toys eg SI lights, climate control, cruise, elec seat. and finally the installation of that Sony audio system. Phew!

if there's any money left in the piggybank after that lot I will have the paintwork rectified and then new twin BMW pinstripes in black & blue.
