E30 320 exhaust

   Looked under my 1990 320i to find holes all around 

the exhaust pipe at the point where it exits from what 

looks like a cat? Problem is my local garage can't 

find anyone to supply the part? Any ideas? Is the 

middle box a cat or could I do away with it and 

replace with a straight-through connecting pipe for 

better performance?
