In the engine bay there is a plate with the engine code - it should say 6 20 E or 6 20 K (or maybe 20 6K, I can't remember the exact order). A 325 should be eg 6 25 K. But this only tells you what BMW put in, not what was later implanted.

A genuine 325 engine should have an oil cooler, but again it is possible to put in a 325 without it, and I know at least one 320 with the cooler added (takes about 10 minutes).

On the left hand side of the engine, just above the sump gasket is the engine number. It's a b+gger to read, I've only managed on engines out of the car. It has the engine number and the code - 6 20 E etc.

I have a 320i also and when I looked for a new gasket in the Bosal catalogue I couldn`t find a 320 gasket that looked like mine but the 325 looked the same. Went to another shop and the guy checked a book with all makes of exhaust and found a 320 one the same as mine. so ur car is probably a 320 if it says so on the log book but i dont know any other way to check except drive a 325 and see if its any faster. it should be!

the m20 engine will give around 9hp genuine froma chip which will liven it up but it wont make it a rocket.

you can squeeze out 15hp with a chip and throttle body though.

320's are nice cruisers but aren't fab on power. The upside on this is that they aren't usualy thrashed like 325's

Could also fit an induction kit, like a Piper-X, which sounds nice but its debatable weather they actualy give any power gain.

I've had many miles of enjoyable motoring in an E30 320i
V reg Rustbucket Merc C220 Cdi estate
J Reg Saab 900i 16v
'63 Ford Anglia 105e deluxe
R reg Honda PC50 moped..

No BMW as yet...
