Hi Guys,

Have a 1985 M635 in which the Speedo and Engine Temp Gauge has stopped working, any ideas?

Fuse seems to control the entire instrument panel so is not that, is it just the case of speedo and temp gauge or sensor failing at roughly the same time?

Kevin

99% likely to be the ni-cad batteries have died on the Service Interval (SI) board, or the board may have a fault. Batteries can be got from Maplins (they have to be soldered in). The SI board lies behind the instruments. Lots of previous posts about this issue which affects pretty much all the 80's models.

A new board is circa £150 and you may be better advised to find a s/h one or have yours refurbed by a specialist who will also check all the instruments too. I had mine done 3 years ago for about £100.

Hi eta, thanks for the feedback.

If the ni-cad batteries have died would this affect the Fuel and Rev counter as well, as these are still working.

Kevin

OK,  just read some of the old posts on similar problem so will check SI board for leaking batteries etc.

If the speedo is not working, does the trip computer work and give you MPG or has this also failed. If the trip computer is working then the SI board is the problem. If the OBC is not working then the sensor on the diff is the problem related to the Speedo. The engien temperature guage is controlled by a sender unit on the engine these don't usually go wrong. From the sounds of things it is more than likely the si Board. The circuits can go dry, the battereis can fail and leak all over the board and the plastic screws that hold the needles on can break and unscrew. My advice would be to either get your board reconditioned or speak to BMW. Once of the BMWCC member recently bought a new one from there BMW dealership for about £200+ vat.

Just to say thanks for your input, have managed to source a complete instrument panel / SI board with new batteries added for £150.00 and will use my existing one as a spare probably.

I am also getting some other work done as well at SJ Automotive in Knaphill which is funny as I saw Sohlman's car there today.
Mr Jones is a friend of a friend so small world.

Hi James,

Car going to Steve's on Tuesday where I will leave it with him for a few days.
If interested I could pop over Wednesday lunchtime as during the week I work and live in Woking.

Met up with Kevin on the Tuesday in the end. Has two very nice cars. His bargain M635 needs a bit of work, however the E30 M3 is jaw droppingly good. Spend about an hour chatting and exchanging car stories. Is nice to meet up with cool like minded people via this forum. Thats how it should work.

Just thought i would mention it.

James

Yep, nice to meet you james and thanks for the comment on the cars.

It was good to talk and to get some valuable pointers regarding 6 series ownership, like you said a bit of work needed on my M6 to get it even close to your example but that is what winters are for.

I am sure you all know this from the meets but Jame's car is a credit to the series and he has not finished with it yet - makes a great M6 alternative with all that Loooow down torque. Good luck with the final engine project, it will be nice to see the results.
