    Posted: 10-September-2005 at 15:32

Looking at buying this car..... its a 1994 (M) 525TDS SE Touring advertised at £1695.00 this link leads you to the details...

http://www.jbsqualityvehicles.co.uk/4613/63205.html

Was wondering if any of you guys can give me any advice on the price, mileage (its done 200k), things to look out for etc... Aparently it 'hunts' from 550 to 700rpm anyone know what that means or could be??!!  My first BMW in 13 years (when I was 20!) so would like to go into this with as much info as possible!!!

Many thanks in advance for any advice given

Can only suggest that you contact a dealer for some free technical advice.

does not sound like a great deal for the money with those miles, also with a idling problem could be expensive to fix. could be easily a fault with the diesel high pressure pump which can cost £1200. they do play up at higher mileages. it could be something simple on the other hand but unless it is going to be fixed before you buy i would leave it alone personally.

Don't touch it. A high mileage TDS is just a money
pit. £1000 diesel pump to cure the idling problem
plus a huge job to change it (not DIY).
But a 525i instead, at least you can repair them
when they go wrong.

Personally I think it's too expensive, anything over 200k (I think) should be under £1000

BTW my J reg does the 'hunting' thing (I think) - it's like it's going to stall at any moment and it sound it bit like a diesel ! Apart from that it's fine, can't complain at £130

I reckon it's about the right sort of money but you'd want the fault investiagted. Parker's value the 525 tds SE touring 5d 1994/M with 200'000 miles as:

Original Price £ 26885
Franchised Dealer £ 3250
Independent Dealer £ 2880
Private Good £ 1860
Private Poor £ 745
Part Exchange £ 1020

If it is the HP Diesel Pump then at around £1000 - £1200 it would make the car over the odds.

I've just bought a 180k mile 525tds se touring full bmw hist to 140k. In germany the taxis have 500k kms and have oil changes every 5000 miles and they seem to go well. It just depends how strong the engine feels. servicing seems to be key. Mine does not hunt either.

My mechanic says £5-600 for pump plus labour, but if the petrols can do 250k miles the diesels should do much more.

i have a 520i se touring for sale 140k miles bmw hist to 120k and indy to 140k N 96 in good nick

I'm not a huge fan of these and would rather have a
525i petrol and pay for the extra fuel. The automatics
are savage on fuel - about 28 mpg average. The
timing chains break on them and the diesel pump is
a bit more than £500 - more like £800 with VAT from
Bosch plus 6 hours to change - with the BMW
special tool to set up the pump timing.
As for chipping it, forget it. It's an ancient high
mileage engine with a turbo and a 22:1
compression ratio and it'll just explode. My mate has
one, chipped it and it blew up spectacularly. £2000
later, it still isn't fixed.
