 Hey guys,

Does anyone suffer from pinking driving a 325 ci sport auto or a 330 ci sport manual? I sold the first 1 coz i thought it was a problem with the car ( bmw never found a fault ) but ive found that the 330ci sport manual is even worse!! any tips on how to stop the engine pinking or is this normal like bmw say it is??

are you runing the car on normal unleaded? 95ron

if so try a few tankfuls of either 97 or 98 ron fuel. Its dearer but it should stop the pinking once the ecu has adjusted itself, this could take several tankfuls. Shell optimax is the only real 98ron fuel but Esso, BP, Sainsburys and some Tescos do a 97ron, I think Total do one too.

If this doesnt cure it then I'm afraid its back to BMW.

Not being rude, but are you sure it's pinking? with the amount of knock sensors and monitoring on both those vehicles I would be very surprised...

its a non mechanical rattle/knocking from the engine caused by the fuel igniting too early or too late ( cant remember which, I'm no mechanic ) in the cylinders. It would be more noticable at low revs especially when pulling away from a standstill. The ECU gets confused and retards the ignition timing too much when using the wrong grade of fuel. As Sleeper says the knock sensors should pick this up and the ECU should adjust for it.

I know that if I run my M roadster on 95 ron fuel it pinks like mad, put 98 in and it is perfect.

Its pre-ignition tony!

your motor has a 'picky' fuel program, no wonder in protests on mortal fuel!

Mell- as tony says, its the 'knocking' noise you hear if someone stalls a modern car slowly (if you know what I mean - laboured).

Sounds like a clattering universal joint
