I was thinking of changing my chip from a superchip to a star*chip. Has anyone heard of them? or have them installed. Are they any good ?

Why would you want to change?

superchips give the max power that any chip can , so you wouldnt gain anything in that department.
just a little crazy.

If you want more power go for a custom remap, don't know what car you have but the addition of a high flow air filter, a decent sports exhaust system and maybe a cam/s, then a custom remap will see you much better power gains.  Chipping alone is not really ideal for any decent power gains.

I have a 1994 E36 320i. I have a Jr induction system installed, I installed it  at the same time as the chip. I thought with a superchip you did not have to remap? and with regards to the sports exhausts if I put one of these on, will I not fail my NCT on emissions. Also what do you mean by cam/s?

A custom chip can eak out a few more hp here and there around the rev range. A Superchip is an model specific upgrade but your own individual engine may have other places that could be improved.

Downside is that you pay for it. The car has to be run through a load of tests - so can cost about 3 time a standard chip. A law of diminishing returns!

As I mentioned on BMW-Driver, the Dastek Unichip will get you as much is possible from your car - its basically a custom remap, problem being that the extra power won't be a huge amount. Have to disagree with Skull though - from speaking to several people, the Superchip seems to be the worst option for the car - I know of several people who have had big problems with them - one guy brought in a 160BHP Honda Civic VTi Jordan and came out with 146BHP after Mc Namara's chipped it!!

More power on a 320i is going to cost big money - try a stainless steel exhaust system, remove the induction kit and replace it with a panel filter, and get it remapped. The exhaust won't affect your emissions for the NCT noticeably. This *should* see you up at around 170BHP.

i had superchip ,no problems in 4 years on same engine .   but i was only after a little extra with a filter and exhaust change . mine hit about 170 as you said kdevit.

birds do head upgrades and other stuff for great power gains, i spoke to them about a year ago and quoted me around 1700 for mine, prices change though.

all depends on how deep ya pockets are

just a little crazy.

yeah - exactly, you could spend €5000 on mods to get a 320i to 200BHP, or just spend €1200 and get a 328i lump dropped in!!

You still driving a 320i skull??

I think, to be fair to Superchips, that the results vary. I would insist on rolling road graphs for before and after though...

Regards the VTi, the power stated afterwards may have been based on torque at the wheels not at the engine (thats whats measured at the rolling road) and so would not account for transmission losses (usually ~17%). Transmission losses are measured as the system natually slows down while disconnected from the engine).

If you factor that in then the potential peak power would be 175bhp - quite an improvement!

Afraid the power was at the flywheel - not at the wheels... Every car is different, so while the Superchip will undoubtably give gains for most cars, the re-mappable chip is the only one I'd actually consider because it will be designed specifically for my car...

I must go in to get the rolling road test done to see what excatly my car has first, and decide from there. I don't know how much more money I want to spend on the car as I had some trouble lately and I might change it.
