What age is the car? I have removed a few barrels on E36's. If you look on the barrel where the key goes in there is a little hole. You need to insert a thin but stiff piece of wire in here then turn the key to position 1, assuming you still have the key, then the barrel will just pull out if you give the key a firm tug. OK maybe not just pull out, a little jiggling and wiggling may be required but that's how you do it on an E36. Hope this helps.

THE CAR IS A 1989 F REG.

THE CAR WAS BROKEN INTO AND SOME D......D TRIED A SCREWDRIVER IN ALL THE LOCKS.

THERE IS A SMALL HOLE IN THE KEY LOCK,I WILL TRY THAT,MANY THANKS.

WHAT SIZE SPANNER DID YOU USE TO REMOVE THE STERING WHEEL. REGARDS,

MILES.

I HAVE TRIED USING A PIECE OF WIRE IN THE SMALL HOLE AS SUGGESTED.

WHEN THE WIRE IS IN PLACE IT PREVENTS THE KEY FROM BEING TURNED TO KEY POSITION ONE.I AM PRETTY SURE IT IS JUST WITHIN THAT RANGE BECAUSE AFTER KEY POSITION ONE, IF I THEN INSERT THE WIRE IT WILL FREELY ALLOW THE KEY TO TURN EXCEPT WHEN IT RETURNS TO KEY POS. 1.

ANY SUGGESTIONS AT ALL?

I HAVE GOT TO GET THIS OUT,IT IS REAL IMPORTANT.

MANY THANKS.

MILES WESTON-LONDON.

Miles,

Only reference that I have found is - To remove the ignition lock cylinder, you will have to remove the steering wheel and remove the lower shroud. At the bottom of the lock cylinder, there's a small hole. It's under the ignition lock cylinder housing facing the floor. Insert the piece of wire or small screwdriver and with the key turn the lock cylinder and then pull it out.
Refitting is a reversal of removal.
Haven't tried it but it seems to be the way, I would perservere

Mate mate sure there is no strain on the steering make sure the wheels are in a straight position

Can you get the key in the ignition and does it turn to position 2 if not then you are going to have to drill it out takes ages and you need to be careful take your time and mind your eyes hope this helps

I CAN NOT GET IT TO TURN TO POSITIION 2 WHEN I PLACE A SMALL WIRE IN THE HOLE.I HAVE ALREADY SNAPPED A KEY TRYING TO TURN IT, I GUESS IT MUST BE A BIT SEIZED TO THE HOUSING.
