Topic: Paint Warranty ??? Posted: 26-November-2005 at 08:29 |
It does strike me that you can get a varied bag of results depending on where you go. My experience is that if it can be got it under warranty then it will, if not goodwill may be considered subject to factors as loyalty to brand, mileage etc. I agree with other comments above with regard to pursuing to BMW if an unsatisfactory answer is given by the dealership. BMW make the decision in most cases anyway, therefore the RTM has to be contacted, so there is no harm in trying! I talk from first hand experience if you know what i mean.

Just had my 2000 (W reg) Z3 M Coupe into Preston Hall (Teesside) a couple weeks back as I had some bubbling on rear hatch around tail gate release button. At first the supervisor there was unsure if the hatch had original factory finish paintwork as he noticed a couple of very minor marks at the corners of the hatch. Luckily there was a BMW GB Technical Inspector there in the workshop who did quick thickness check and inspection. It was spot on to factory spec. Result, photographs taken and new hatch ordered, they don't do repairs I was informed. New hatch will be fitted in the New Year all covered under paint warranty.

Think this depends on who you are dealing with. I put in a speculative claim on six different rust spots in the week my 6yr
Paint Warranty ran out. All were approved by the Regional Tech
Manager and I ended up with two new front wings, two new front
doors, and both sides of the car resprayed in a BMW bodyshop to a very high standard. No complaints here!

I had a letter published in BMW Car magazine about the exact same subject.
Basically, you haven't got a hope.
At the time (in 2000) I had a '95 328i. The warranty applied, but, when I when I went to the dealership they said it was "stonechip" damage.
I pointed out that there was rust on the rear arches AND the tailgate, but they insisted it was stonechip damage (how the hell stones get underneath the lip of the tailgate and underneath the seal is beyond me!)
They repaired both under "goodwill" (the car had only 60K and FBSH), but I still got the impression I was being ripped.
I later found rust behind the front arches - apparently a normal problem if mud flaps have been fitted to the front.
I got this done by the dealer also under "goodwill", only to find that the job had been botched, and the paint peeled off under pressure washing. The second time it got resprayed, they went through the metal, and told me I needed to pay for two new wings! At this point I got my dealreship involved again, but still ended up paying £200 in labour charges.
The moral of the story is the same that I got published - the paint warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on - BMW will claim "outside influences" every time. Unless you have the patience, time and of course money to take them to court, you 'aint got a chance!

Tell the dealer to arrange for the BMW GB Technical manager to inspect the vehicle on his/her next visit (they used to visit dealerships 2 - 3 times a year). Don't let them stonewall you, insist on it.

Any body had any dealings with dealers regarding paint warranties???
Got a few small bubbles on the leading edge of the n.s. sill right behind the front wheel.
Took it to the dealers today but they are saying its everything but a defect !!! Well it sure aint a chip in the paint work !!!
