I have a 1990 E30 320i Cabriolet and would like to buy a hardtop before the winter sets in. I have found a hardtop in Belgium for not much money but have heard/read that hardtops supplied on the continent will not fit UK supplied car without a fitting kit. Is this the case and if so where do I get a fitting kit?

Thanks and regards

Tony Mundy

All E30 cabs need a hardtop fitting kit. As standard they do not have fixing points for the hardtop (unless factory supplied with hardtop or hardtop preparation). Have a look on real.com to see which bits you need, and see if you already have them installed.

There are BMW hardtops and Weissmann hardtops, with vinyl or painted exterior, cloth or leather lining, with or without sunroof etc. Many people say the Weismann tops match the cars styling better. Personally I think topless suits the car best...

I have to agree with you, topless does suit the car best.

real.com is the Real Player website, not quite what I was expecting.

You need fitting kit, item 3 on this picture:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BA11&mospi d=47288&btnr=54_0163&hg=54&fg=15

If you don't have a hardtop preparation, item number 25 (which is metal for hardtops) will instead be a plastic thing that looks the same. Have a look under the rubber cap (item 22) which is next to the little hinged door above the roof hinge point. The rubber cap blanks off the hole where the hardtop attaches, when the hardtop is not there.

I'm not sure I've explained this well ! Just compare the picture to your car and all will become clear

Explained perfectly.

Your based in Germany then, spent 4 months last year working near Koln. Fantasic time, just wish I had the e30 then, I would have looked for the hardtop in Germany.

Have a look on ebay.de, search for E30 Hardtop, and see what different sorts are out there.

You could always go silly and buy the BMW hardtop hoist for fitting, removing and storing the beastie !

Hi

Most UK cars are already prepped for a hardtop and the same installation kit works for the BMW and Wiesmann hardtops without modification...makes no difference where you buy one of these hardtops from.

If you dont have the installation kit the convertible register can source for less than half cost of a new one.

Hardtops are always available but you have to consider your preference and its intended use etc

Good luck
