I'm looking for advice on how to activate the TMC on my 1999 e39, or more specifically, which map disk to buy.

I have been researching this and found out that TMC (Traffic Management Channel) traffic data has been available via RDS since 2001 (ITIS get it from Trafficmaster).

My Satnav display shows a TMC option and various post on the net state that BMW didn't pay the licence on their disks, but that disks are available with the licence activated.  This implies that if I buy the right disk then TMC should work?

I've found this TMC enabled disk, anyone know if this will work?  Or another?

It seems to work ok on my 2000 E39 with satnav and standard BMW disks - e.g. get the little symbol to show where traffic jams are on the map. You have to be zoomed in quite a bit for the symbols to show up, and not all jams are covered, so you might need to keep an eye on it for a bit to see it working. From memory I think there is a menue option to turn it on and off as well, so check for that.

I think If I remember right you need a few things:

1) A TMC enabled map disc. I know the map discs for the 7 series are TMC enabled (about £75 from BMW)

2) A dual tuning radio (One for listening to a radio station and the other for getting the TMC updates)

3) Set the Traffic channel on the Sat Nav/ Radio to Classic FM (I think there are other channels that work also). Use the Info button.

Then your TMC logo on the bottom of the Map screen should go Green.
