hey guys was thinking of buying a bmw 316i of the e30 extraction mainly because of insurance problems only 21 now i was just wondering if they are good to drive or is the engine too small to make them interesting. what are they like on jungle juice too currently driving an escort and i'm very bored with it to be honest it never misses a beat though  - i have wanted a bm for years even before i started driving and can buy one soon enough but they seem to be fairly thin on the ground plus some freinds say the 316 is useless and anything but a 2 litre is a waste are they right cheers!!!!

Tell your friends to stop talking rubbish; they're probably all driving 1  litre Corsas with Motorstore finest additions.  They're just jealous because they lack taste!

One of the guys had an e36 316 (is that 1.6 or 1.8 - can't remember!) at Mondello at the last track day, and it went like a kicked rollerskate!

I used to have the E30 316 (not injected, the carb model) and I must say it was a great car, except I used to get a bit of speed vibration at about 70mph.

I have an '89 (E30) 316i.... lovely car! Had it out for the track day in Mondello in April (I think it was April!!). Had a mental laugh!

Mine is totally standard and I was well able to keep up with the 320s on the straights and round the twisty bits- so it's not that slow!

I'd say go for it, keep it for a year or two, then change up to one with a bigger motor!! They are comfortable, cheap to tax and insure, misers on petrol and if you are mechanically inclined, they are very serviceable.

If you do decide to purchase, go for one that hasn't been abused. The prices here are silly at the moment - you can get a spotless one in England for very reasonable money (VRT is not bad as far as I can remember). Have a look at Autotrader.

Once you go RWD, you never go back!

Some stuff to look for:
- Water in the footwells, E30s have a habit of rotting below the windscreen.
- Water in the pockets on either side of the boot, caused by a dodgy boot seal or seal between tail lighs and body.
- Coolant in the Oil, look at the inside of the oil filler cap... if the oil on it looks milky walk away. The head gasket is probably gone and/or the head is cracked.

Common annoyances on E30s are water pumps, thermostats and fuel pumps- but they are pretty cheap to replace.

Go for a clean one and look after it - it'll run forever!

Just checked the ROS site for a 1990 E30 316i 2dr with 100K on the clock - VRT is only 315!

A spotless high spec 3 will cost you about 1200 - you could have it home and cleared for ~2000.

A few of the lads here have brought in a few cars... they might be able to make some suggestions.

cheers man just checking out the auto trader now does 100k mean anything to these cars what would be a good mileage to go far - i've bought low mileage cars before and problems still seem to creep up round the 70 80 mark any particular time when things go with a 316 e30

When I sold my 1989 320i to gjoconnor it had about 165k miles on it and was still going strong.
If they have been looked after then they can go on forever.
When buying make sure there is some kind of service history in the following format:-
Oil Service
Inspection I
Oil Service
inspection II
Oil...
Bring a decent mechanic with you when buying as the last thing you want is a lemon.

Nah, 100k is nothing... most of them will march on past 200k if they are serviced regularly. I got mine at about 100k and never went through an unreliable stage. You'll always have to put a few parts into a car that old. I'm not driving it these days, but in the two years I had it on the road I did the clutch, water pump, thermostat, a few bushes and the fuel pump - ordinary wear and tear I suppose.

Hey vinny, as the resident 316-head here I'm resonably qualified to delve into the pros and cons...

I really enjoy my 1-6 (e36 saloon), yes its underpowered, but it still is a hoot to drive if you've got the balls to keep the momentum up. It will HAMMER most all of the 1.4 and below brigade; and with the reduced weight of the e30 you'd prob be up with the newer "gti's".... but the rear wheel drive is the shining light of bimmer ownership. Even with a 316 you can get the tail out if you coax it right.
I was holding my own with some-o-da-big-playa's at mondello (killian, kin muhahahahah).

As i said I could definitely do with another 100bhp or so ;) and my next move will definitely be a 325+, but at the moment that means a whole lot more tax and insurance. Which I cant really justify seing that the 1-6 is grand for the every day traffic jams and the like.

Oh and I usually get about 400 and a bit miles for my 60L of fuel.

Taken from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, Mr. Creosote was an outrageously fat bloke who ate everything and kept vomiting, right until he took a wafer thin mint and exploded.
Strangely you can buy Mr. Creosote figures.

...adn while Im at it (being the sad git and all) here is a transcript of that scene.

When I bought my 316 it had 98k on the clock (won't mention the rust - it was restored from flood damage so had plenty)

Parts are dirt cheap, wings are about 28 from euro car parts and bolt on (no welding required). The clutch slave cylinder went on mine and wasn't expensive to fix. Bought a second hand lux interior for 100 (had rear arm and head rests). Not sure about the 316i, but I doubt there will be much difference. The gear change was sweet (it was the only manual car I have owned) but if you have large - size 12 - feet you may find the pedals a little too close together and offset to the right.

I loved my old car and only got rid when I traded it in for a 320i.
