Didn't know that. Right, looks like we'll have to run that Vento a bit more often.....

Funny thing is, my sister's '92 Mk.3 Golf (also "K"-plated) has the same engine and gearbox, yet shows a lot more life..... and it's done over 130,000 miles.

Unreal.

Here is a link to his section on the Polo forum.

Alan is a good guy and he'll see you right

Price generally depends on if soldering is required. Most pre '94 Polo chips come in at around £30!

He could probably do BMW chips if you gave him the ECU numbers...

Do PM some details if you can. Anything that might save a little mpg would be welcome - as would more enthusiastic performance

At the moment, the Vento as it is is slower off the mark and drinks more than our old 1989 VW Jetta GL (sold last year) , which had the same engine capacity, but a Weber carb with manual choke  . That car was taken up to an indicated 115 on the A1(M) - frightening when you remember that the owner's handbook said top speed was only meant to be 110.....

Well, most 1781cc cars from that period were SPi. The MPi injection was for the 2 litre engines generally. I know a guy who does generic chips for most VW's. I had one from him on an old Mk.1 Polo that I'd converted to injection and it was smoother running and so long as I could stay off the loud pedal, the MPG was increased too. I suspect your ECU has a soldered in chip unlike most of the Polo's I mess with so you're looking at about £120 to have the chip fitted.

Think this is the single-point one. It's on a "K"-plate, and has very few bells and whistles. There is a marked reluctance between about 2000 and 2500 revs, which has been there ever since we got the car. It has done about 108,000 miles.

AHA!  ...and your recommendation?

Right, what can I do to overcome the sluggishness of a 1993 VW Vento GL (1781cc, 5spd manual)?

Well, it wasn't the one that required an engine(although it looked identical to it). I went to view that car but the guy selling it I think had an unrealistic reserve on it. Nice car though

BMW's are a bit of a newbie to me. Give me a VW and there won't be much I can't do to it. Messed around with my mates 735i doing propshaft bearings and exhausts and stuff but that's as far as I've got.

Having scoured through ebay and the forums over the weekend, kinda makes me tempted to go out and buy a 6
