Hello All

well 'the beast' as it was nick named on my last job has its MOT up 2moro - yes yes I know I should have taken it in before so that I could get it fixed up on all the dodgy bits...................but what I'm looking for is a website with the requirements for the MOT test so i can check as much as I can before it goes in - any ideas folks?

Also has anyone got any good tips for any sort of additive i could chuck in the tank to help with the emissions - i think thats where it might struggle - 169k on the clock now, and of course an oil burner!

Anyway any hints, tips and advice much appriciated.

Dunno about additives mate, aren't they to help clean the injectors? What engine have you got in there? It might be wise to look deeper into your engine's possible problems, like how much oil is being used? Does the valvegear sound rough?  Has anyone being playing with the idle mixture or AFM to "fix-it"? Are all the air & vacuum hoses good? Have you done a compression test? If it has been looked after then 169k miles should present few problems.

thanks shaun

basically it chucks out loads of blue smike on start up - re any tests - well I havent done any to be honest - its a e28 520i - M20 engine i believe - lots of history but its no minter so I'm just really enjoying it while it lasts and I find time to go and buy a decent one.

So its just something that I could chuck in today and it might help it get through tomorro - probably the draem product that doesnt exist but hey if you dont ask you dont get..........

heavier weight oil can help if you have seal problems, but unlikely to alter worn rings/bores - without knowing the specifics of your engine problems, its difficult to offer much advice.

u can get an oil aditive smoke stop or something which ment to help prevent old cars from smoking so much, but i dont know what effect that has on a CO meter

as long as it is not chuckin out smoke u should be alright it'd an injection car on 80's emision laws when half the cars around at that time were still using carbs

if all else fails u could try the old spunge down the exhaust pipe trick

What's that do then? Blow out and shoot the tester bloke?

I don't think they can MOT cars that shoot sponges, potatoes, paintballs etc at the mechanic!

The old Mazda van we used for work failed on its emmisions, and we were told to put a bottle of something or other in the tank and then run it at higher revs than usual for a while (3rd instead of 4th). Think it was injector cleaner. Got it from a local garage, worth a go for a couple of quid.

sound's like you've a Valve problem maybe just the seal's? might be worth giving the engine a good flush and a service. maybe a bottle of "wynns hydrulic valve and lifter fluid" with the new oil, stick a new air fillter in if it need's it, top-up your fuel with high grade fuel (super unleded) give it a good blast before your mot and see how it fair's, if all is well then since it'll have another year's worth of use see about getting the valve seal's re-placed?

it failed! but on a dodgy shocker and needs some welding - 200 he says so im going for that - been off road since tho as I'm waiting for a boot latch from germany - taking ages!

 

Soon as thats here I'll whip her down to longsight garage and get her back on to the highway.
