slight steering problem, need advice.the steering universal joint on my 89 325i was removed by so called "mechanic" to check why steering was catching.[turned out to be front left spring retainer.it was rotten around where shock goes through.] he never marked column or rack before removing universal joint thus refitting it in different position.as a result of which when if i half lock steering to the right car pulls to the right & left if i lock to left.ive had a look and there doesn`t seem to ba a master spline on column or rack.is there any way of refitting it correctly or would i be better off bringing car to a proper bmw mechanic...any advice would be appreciated..

can only suggest you line wheels up straight then disconnect steering, rotate steering to straight ahead then reconnect the linkage.

the linkage is the problem.it looks like it has to be fitted in the right position on the splines but how do i know if its in the right position.i reckon it will be a case of trail & error ontil i get it right...
