Hi

 

I was wondering if it makes any difference if the car is auto or manual with regard to putting an SI board from an M535 manual into my 1985 636 csi auto.  I'm just going to replace the SI board itself, not the instrument cluster itself, but not sure if the auto gear selection indicator is powered from the SI board or not.

Any advice greatly appreciated

yes, it does make a difference. Done this a couple of times in manual and
auto cars, and if you try putting the board from a manual into an auto (or
vice versa) you get a very strong smell of burning from the instrument
cluster after a minute or two when you switch on. Never discovered what
it was that was burning - didn't wait around to find out!
Looks like auto for auto, manual for manual. Change the batteries while
you're there.

Dan - this is really useful info. I have a '85 635csi on which the clocks have been changed. It's also been converted from auto to manual, using an M535 gearbox (prior to me purchasing it). Surprise, surprise, the speedo etc does not work, though the temp and fuel gauges do and occasionally the tacho does. Any advice, based on your experience? I have the old clocks, but from what you're saying it sounds like I should investigate SI board swap, for starters. Not sure it was ever done. . . regards, Graeme

I think your gauges aren't working because of dead batteries and/or a
faulty board. The batteries on the board that power the service indicator
wear out and can leak onto the circuit board, which can send the
instruments a bit mad. Speedo always seems to to fail before the tacho.
Pull the instrument cluster, take the back off it and lift the board out (not
that tricky - I can supply instructions) and have a look.

Once the weather clears -- it's blowing a gale down here at present -- I'll plan to have a look behind the cluster. Shame when they changed it, at the time of swap from auto to manual, that they swapped for a higher mileage set! On the look out for something less damning! 209k it hasn't done!! More like 130k. But 209k it reads at present; though, because of fact they aren't working anyway, at least it isn't rising into even more of a fiction. G.

It is possible to dismantle the instrument cluster and do the necessary corrections.....
