Anyone changed out the condenser on their E31?

Are workshop manuals available from BMW?

Are mudflaps available for the 8-series???

Any help would be much appreciated.

On workshop manuals side there are 4 cd's you should get hold of.

1) EPC - Electronic parts catalogue,

2) TIS - Technical Information Service,

Easy to find these on Ebay

3) ETM - Electrical Troubleshooting Manual

Like rocking horse sh*t - I still haven't got one

4) HTK  - odds and ends BMW info

Usually thrown in with 1) and 2)

There are different versions so make sure your operating system is covered. I'm running ME and its solid without any problems. You can see some inserts posted on http://membres.lycos.fr/technice31/

Mudflaps.... seem to remember someone asking the same question on Club E31 when it was alive - I seem to remember that the short answer was WHY?? Not sure they are available for the E31. Nothing the stop you adapting other series mudflaps.

Interested to see the score on Andyboy's AC

Something info I found on the Pre-purchase info on http://membres.lycos.fr/technice31/

"Check air conditioning and heating--turn blower on full, low airflow indicates a need for new micro filter and implies poor maintenance

Check for cold AND hot air coming out of all vents by switching between A/C and heat

Failure of either heat or cold to come out of either side (driver or passenger) vents on dash indicates a possible HVAC repair that requires removal of the dashboard"

Hope this helps

Thanks for your help PhilC, will endeavour to get hold of the cd's. I've had the aircon system tested with Autoclimate gear at my local garage and I need a new condenser (the radiator/heat exchanger mounted in front of the engine coolant radiator) and can't figure out how it comes out. Has anyone done this job themselves or are you all rolling in filthy lucre and pay the BMW garage rates to have it all done?

Why fit mudflaps? Because the car looks better finished off with them and they prevent most of the damage that would otherwise be caused to the undersills, etc.

What is ME that you refer to?

Try Roadfly archives for the dismantling of the radiator. Someone has done it and you may find a step by step guide and possibly some pics. Its the best site for DIY 8ers.

How much did they quote you for a new condenser? If you have to go to a BM garage try an independant BM specialist as they have cheaper labour charges than the main dealers. I use Autotechnic in Old Trafford for all my work (still under warranty). Pretty happy with their service so far.

Microsoft Windows ME - more suited to games than the NT office set-up. Saying that since I invested in an Xbox not touched the PC gameswise!!

Best quote so far is around £150 for the condenser from Autoclimate themselves. I'm definately doing the job myself then get the garage (a Ford dealer incidently as I also own a Cosworth and trust them with all my cars) to gas the system up and complete all the other checks. I live in E. Yorks by the way.

£150 quid is a good deal. About the same for other makes.

There's mobile a/c techs who'll gas up your system once its ready pretty cheaply too.

Good luck with the job.

Workshop manuals...I hear it's worth getting the 7 series one as a lot of the stuff is the same (tho a lot isn't too!). Mind you it's pricey...

That's your warranty paid for!!!

I heard a rumour that 165K was the max for the warranty for 7's and 8's. Mines done 117K now; hopefully three more years.
