did all the e34s always have the batteries under the rear seat or did the early models have them in the engine bay?

I think ive seen one 518 with the battery under the bonnet before, but not sure if it was factory fit or the owner had moved it.

My e34 has the main battery under the bonnet and a 2nd battery under
the rear seat. I think M20'd & early M50'd cars had the main
battery under the bonnet until mid-'91, when all batteries were fitted
under the rear seat. Dunno about 518's.........

yeah that makes sense
mine is an early 91 m50 and my last one was a late 91 m50
i thought maybe some wannabe rudeboy had moved it to the front to help balance out the wieght from his poorly wired sound system he felt the need to hack holes in the rear shelf and centre section of the boot for

Yup, my M20'd 525 has the battery in the engine bay, as did the early 520, the 530, 535 + td had it underneath seat.
They were later all moved to under the seat except for the 518!
