Topic: Window Needed Posted: 15-December-2005 at 07:55 |
Hi,
Does anybody have a spare piece of glass for the driver side window or know where I may be able to get one. My car is an 86 635csi. It needs to be bronze tinted. What a nightmare. I took my car into have a speaker replaced and ended up with a bent wing and door and completely shattered window. No fault of my own! Cheers |

Think you can get the window glass from BMW Mobile Tradition through the main dealer.
Send the bsatrads the bill !!! I would have broken legs if that had happened to my Six ! |

Damaged front or rear 'wing'?
If front, bill the bastards for a new pair!!! Whats the story behind the sad event exactly - I mean how can that happen from just having new speakers fitted, 10000Watts or what? |

Got some glass form Fritz Bitz.
You wanted the story: I had some component speakers installed in my car months ago including some custom made door pods (which I need to post pictures of). One of the mid range speakers was faulty so I began a lenghty process of trying to get it replaced. The guy who did the work for me couldn't get a replacement as the Uk distributor for Power Accoustik (USA) had gone bust. Anyhow he agreed to install a set of different speakers (Mac Audio) for the time being. So far so good (although tedious). Much to my horror he backed the car into his workshop with the door open which broke the glass buckled the door hinges and dinted the wing. To say I was gutted was understatement as I was just getting the car up to the level I wanted. Anyhow he was just as devastated and wanted to get the car sorted for me so suggested a body shop that had done loads of work for him. I was obviously concerned and wanted to make sure they knew what they were doing and were going to treat the car correctly. As it happens they rightly pointed out various areas on both wings were the car had been previously bodged with filler and the paint had started bubbling. I was aware of one wing that was dodgy and I had got a replacement wing for 30 quid yeah unbelievable I know. My plan was to sort this in the summer but it now made sense to get both wings sorted along with the accident damage. They advised me not to break the factory seals as the wing would be ok if done properly so no need for the replacement. The car is still in their shop and I've visited it several times as they wanted to show me the level of workmanship. I was really impressed as I'd never seen lead filling before. I should get the car back this weekend and I'm hoping it's going to be big improvement. They are charging me 350 which I thought was cheap considering there patching up 4 areas (in the usual places!). But I guess the proofs in the pudding and hopefully this isn't going to be another painfull lesson in owning a classic. |

If you get your wings sorted for 350quid you won't have done badly. Bit of a nightmare though..... Where are the speaker pod pictures? We all need some clues on this one.... cheesy 6x4s just don't cut it.... cheers

No cheese. I bought some spare door cards and then had
some black pods sculptured to fit the door contours. The pods hold a 6" mid and a tweeter. The rear quarter panels are also fitted with a set of 5" components. All powered by a 1500 Watt amp, sounds great! I'm saving up for a 12" sub and amp which I'm going mount in the boot. The components are Power Accoustik which is fantastic quality but not that well known and as I've found difficult to get hold. This is a shame as their subs are amazing and with the right amp will provide an incredibly tight bass note. The whole system is built around quality as opposed to pure power. Oh yeah nice red Kenwood head unit to match the interior. When I get the car back I'll take some pictures and post them up. |

I want to see this when it's done. There will now be a better sounding six then mine. Good stuff. Might have to get some custom builds at the front myself. James |

I'd be keen to hear how your go with those wings, if you're happy to report back. I have a quote for repair of both mine: £600, with bubbling only occurring at the front. So that quote suddenly seems expensive, given your report of £350. A movable feast this wing repair biz seems!

Graeme
Your quote seems about right. The body repair work I had done was good but the paintwork is off match. Currently wrangling with them about it all. Also waiting for good weather to get some pics of the audio install (the source of all my problems!) I'm learning the hard way with my first Six! |

Be great to see those pictures when the weather lets you take them. Sorry the paintwork is off match on the body work. I had some rust cut out and arrnanged to get my own paint mixed beforehand and took it along, to ensure an exact match. A good job done; but next time I guess, with that paint now finished, I'll take the risk and be in same boat of trusting match is made on the wings for the £600 quoted. All being well, when done, I must take some new pictures also. Same: I'm learning with my first E24. I have quite a way to go yet; feel like I'm a "new boy on block" again after evolving over past years to being reasonably confident with work on E38 and E34. Hey, but all good fun!

Not sure where you are based, but our 7 Chair is having his B10 restored by a highly recommended/regarded bodyshop near him (Nth London/Herts I think). I would sonner pay £600 for a job that's going to last than £350 for a 5 year repair.
