Hi all,

I did search the forums but couldn't find anything.....  My head gasket on my '89 325i needs replacing.  I've got a mate who's handy with the spanners, but a garage I approached (who quoted £600) said you need a special tool to stop the engine turning while you're doing it.  Is this the case?  Anyone know where I can find a manual about replacing please?  Any tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Stuart

I replaced the head on my 325i sport, but didn't need a tool, I do believe you need one for an M40 engine though, so maybe this is where he's got confused.

Invest in a Bentley manual, very good for an M20 engined E30 owner, I do believe there's a link on the main site to amazon.

BTW this should be posted in the tech section

Thanks for the tip on the book.  Maybe Santa will bring me one!

Sorry about posting it in here - guess who needs to learn to use a scroll bar!  Didn't notice the tech section down there!

No it was me! The above pic was taken by me in the middle of the job!

Labour rates are high for this job as it is time consuming, but can easily be tackled by the home mechanic, I've got to do another soon on my track car!

How often does the headgasket need replacing? My 155,000 miles 325i has had two replaced in its life, the most recent being about 10k ago...

I don't think there is a set period for them to be changed, it's one of them things that will need doing when you're about to pack up for your caravanning trip to the South of France.

The head gasket had not previously been replaced on my old sport above, it was on 110k when the head cracked, and needed replacement.

What's wrong with it? If there is oil in the water or
viced versa, it's most likely a cracked head. You'll
need to remove the cam and look very carefully for
this. If it's overheating, it could be a crack into an
exhaust port or a badly corroded waterway which will
need welding. Either way the head bwill need
pressure testing and skimming before refitting.

The best solution is to get an exchange
reconditioned head - there is a company called
Corry's (google search) who are about the very best
for this. The heads look literally like brand new and
are a quality product. Get a complete head and cam
from them, do a swap over with a decent head
gasket set, new cambelt and tensioner, water pump
etc and send the old head back to get the surcharge
back. It's more expensive for sure, but the only 101%
surefire way of doing it.

How many cracked heads have been refitted do you
think??
