Yo Guys!

Right, I'm now the proud owner of a very nice E39 Touring, which is proving to be an absolutely great car! I've only got a couple of niggles to iron out, one of which is that the windscreen washers don't seem to be working, the other is the *dreadful* quality of the factory audio!! The stereo is the basic factory fit (I guess - as no DSP) - theres absolutely no bass whatsoever & my guess is that the main culprits are the rear 'celiling' speakers used in the Touring. There is a horrible kind of mid-band resonance, which makes everything sound 'boxy'; anything more than moderate volume and the whole lot sounds just 'orrible! As there is no real space behind them (roof speakers) to make up any kind of enclosure, it would look like you're always going to be nobbled here if you're thinking of upgrading the driver to get better performance. What about fitting 'mids' in these positions & supplimenting the setup with a small sub somewhere out of sight ? BTW, I don't want to fill the car with aftermarket speakers poking out of every orifice, so anything that improves matters with the least cutting / sawing & mimimum size is cool!

Cheers,

Pete.

The poor sound quality is not unique to the touring.  The saloons are weak also.  The BMW Business stereo is pretty weak.  The professioanl is a little better, and there is also a factory fit option of Hi-Fi speaker system & DSP !!  Im sure retrofit is possible, but complex.  DSP is particularly tricky I think.

I agree with the grim sound from factory fit. Have a look at this site.

They ship to the UK.

I have the factory fit hi fi option with seperate amp behind the cd changer in my e39 saloon. And it's still crap! I don't have the dsp though.
