Glasgow up to Fort William is fantastic.

BTW, has your keyboard got a caps key?

yep glasgows great-I had a strange experience in sauciehall street a few yrs back.

I was there for a conference at the secc & one evening me & a few others drifted around the bars in sauciehall street (it was on jack daniels birthday so jd was cheap I remember & I got a pack of free jd playing cards) we went through a few bars & came to one where a Clash tribute band was playing - I thought great ,I like the Clash, lets go see what there like only to be told by the doorman that I Was TOO OLD to get in.

Afterwards I went back to my room & my pipe & slippers.

Easy tiger!  I'm sure Drew wasn't trying to be offensive, he hates everything, not just Scotland

Glasgow's a wonderful place with more culture than most parts of the uk.  The people there are amongst the finest in the UK so no need to go on the defensive about it.

Now play nice

Is it? Glasgow is the only place I've ever seen a
Woman spit in the street, although there are some
good curry houses up there (Bombay Blues).

Maybe I should sell up here and buy ten houses up
there with the proceeds?

I am on my second e34 '95 which is a fully loaded 540 touring with M suspension and sports kit. It's the best car I've ever driven and I've done a few working in the motor trade. It goes well, been 100% reliable (as have all 3 beemers through the years) and I've never spent any amounts of money on either of them. My future thoughts did lie with an e39 (maybe another 540 or M5) but owing to some comments on here and the fact I love my e34 so much, perhaps not. I don't have a problem throwing money at my baby. It does owe me now though because of some !"£$%^& *@?hole hitting it and driving away from the scene and being untraceable because he gave a false name and address when he bought his car but thats enough about that, I'll only get worked up! Insurance company gave me some stupid amount for it because to repair at BMW was quoted at £4500! which put is 'beyond economical repair' so I bought it back and repaired it for £1800. Still makes my blood boil!. That aside, I can't fault any e34 experience I've had. Bits are easy to come by and fairly cheap and they aren't too technical to work on compared to the e39.

I'm a big e34 fan and i'll keep mine until it dies and buries itself, that day will be a very emotional one.

Tell me about it...I sold my E30 325 to buy my E34 535 sport because the e34 is so much a better car in every area...how much would a e30 325 Sport in the condition like my 535 sport is (2 owners 64K, FSH and mint) be worth?

Thousands more i bet

Doesnt seem logical to me at all.

Well I bought my E34 from my brother who was about to scrap it (on the advise of the rac) due to the fusible link. Once that has been replaced I paid him £400 - however it needed a new exhaust and manifold downpipe and a new set of tyres.

So a total price of £1000 since then (2 months) it has had fuel, an oil change and I will change the brake/clutch/gearbox and rear axle oils once it is warm enough! almost forget I have just bought a new set of mudflaps off ebay £34 delivered for front and back.

It was bought to replace a Porsche 924S which wasn't enough of a sportscar compared to my other car and is so far a lot more reliable. It helps that I did a lot of the work on the BM when my brother owned it so I know the maintainance history.

p.s. look at my website to find see my other car.

Can't be much fun on the Dole up there!!

E34's are probably better everyday cars than the E39
- cheap bits everywhere, most of it is simple DIY.
E39's have a lot of issues - alloy blocks (scrap if the
car overheats), pricey bits new or used and they can
be a real sod to work on - you wouldn't believe how
difficult changing the rear shocks is. Plus the
electrics aren't that clever. If a speedo packs up, it's a
complete new cluster which has to be coded to the
car - no DIY scrapyard swaps here.
E38? Fantastic car but but would never own one as
really they're a load of crap - especially the M62 V8's
which are a disaster area. Everything is expensive,
the electrics are a nightmare (all parts coded just
like the E39) and like the E39, suspension bits are
alloy and ££££££££££.
I'd rather have a late nineties Jaguar (6 Cyl) to be
honest, much better car.

I used to have a '92 E34 520 which was my first BMW & it gave me a taste for more. It could have done with another half litre capacity but was fine most of the time. It's only real fault was the dreaded BMW clutch judder.

I sold it to a guy at work 4 years ago & he's only just sold it. I replaced it with a '98 Audi A6 2.4 auto which had all the toys. It looked very impressive & had great build quality but it didn't ride or handle as well & lacked character after the E34. I sold it to get the Six.

I have a '93 E30 316 Touring (one of the last) as a daily driver. It's got character & reliability has been bulletproof but I just fancy a bit more refinement.

I'm looking for a new job so travelling distance will dictate engine size though the Touring is heavier on fuel than you'd expect for it's size. A 530 or 730 V8 might fit the bill.

Couldn't agree more Paul!

We used to run an E46 03 330d, great car, but not as well built as the E34 IMHO, had it from new  - the last new car I expect to buy as well.

Also used to give the same kind of mpg in mixed driving as our M50 engined 95 E34 2.0i.........

E34's give great vfm.
My 635's.

Paul

It has to be said that the electrical problems on e34's are virtually always limited to the same things.......fractured fuse link (windows roof and wipers failing), central locking (always a door relay) and number plate lights (usually the loom where it enters the boot).

My e39 has had numerous electrical gremlins, not all of the cheap to fix. The dash pixels really is too common for BMW to walk away from. Thats just blatent poor quality that should not be on a car of this supposed quality. PDC sensors failing, Wheel speed sensors failing, airbag warning lights staying on (and it can stay on cos I'm sick of it), Bulb failure warnings when all the bulbs are okay etc. etc. etc. I may as well bought an Alfa. At least it would have had character. My e39 was approx. £37k when new and it's not like it's one of the expected "first of the new" models which always have a few teething problems.

Andy S, Stick with one of the last E34's and get one well specced with leather and air. You will not be disappointed. Theres a thread on the BMWCAR forum presently you may be interested in called "530i-Charisma bypass?" which does not just focus on the quality issues of the e39 but the total lack of character. Believe me this one hit the nail on the head for me.

I love E34's & am now on my 3rd & I hope to always own one.

I agree with James that it was the last of the line of "real" BMW's,sure the later models are higher specced & perform better (sometimes but they are nowhere near as well built.

Admittedly they have electrical probs & common probs like all cars but right now they represent superb value for money.

I didnt really buy mine as an investment so I am not really worried about its resale value & I have spent money on getting it how I like it,probably more than I could sell it for but I love it & would not part with it willingly-it sticks to the road like nothing else & goes pretty well too.

I believe good e34's may well increase in value at some stage but who cares ! As long as its reliable & fun I will keep it.
