Does anyone know if both the struts and springs hold up the ride height of the E39 suspension.  Its just that both my driver sides have dipped lower than the near side.

My off side front strut is leaking oil so could well be a factor to this.

i'd say your shock's or spring's are weak? maybe even a broken spring

if any other suspension part was to fail then it would mean broken bolt's or damaged rubber's/bushes and you would either hear a knocking noise or your car would be un-drivable.

I believe that I have read in the ETK service manual on CD that you can change single shock absorbers on BMW E39 vehicles.  By this I mean not having to change a front or rear pair.

Has anyone also come accross this.

you can change one but its false economy to do so. both shocks have done the same time and work, sods law says the one you don't change will fail soon or be weaker than the new one.

Right thats the shocks sorted but please don't tell me that the springs must be replaced in pairs also.

Then again it kind of goes without saying that both coils would have had the same thrashing over the years and should be replaced with fresh new ones.

I agree, only replace in pairs because BMW ride and running characteristics are so tricky to fault find with a myriad of reasons from the simplest to the most complex.
