hey everyone
this may seem as a very thick question but i've been on the search for an e30 bimmer and was wondering what exactly are the types of engines in the 316i, their cc figures and their bhp. i have total bmw mag latest edition in front of me and it says the e30 316i from 1983-1994 had a 4cylinder 8valve engine 1766cc 90 bhp. There are also figs in  recent Pbmw mags that support this  giving reference to an m10  engine  however i have an older edition of pbmw about two years old and it says the 316i from 1988 - 1991 was fitted with an m40 engine - 1596 cc 4cylinder with 102 horsepower.
does anyone know which one of these are correct as the cc amount is playing a big factor in actually getting insured on my own policy cheers!

vinny - both are sort of correct.  From the introduction of the e30 is 1983 until late '87 ('88 model year) the 316 had a 1.8 carb engine and was badged as 316.  From the '88 model year it got a 1.6 injected engine.  Not entirely sure of bhp figures off the top of my head but those you have quoted sound about right.
Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93.

Prev:

e39 523i SE.
e36 325i Coupe *2, 323i SE, 316iSE.
e30 325iSE 2dr, 320i Conv, 320i 2dr, 316i.

The earlier M10 engine dates back to the 02 series cars. The 316 & 318 used the same engine capacity (1766cc) but in different states of tune.

Power for the M10 316 was 90bhp @5500rpm, 101lb/ft @ 4000rpm

Power for the M10 318 was 105bhp @5800rpm, 105lb/ft @ 4500rpm

The later M40 that replaced the M10 for the 1990 model year was based on the M10 but had a belt driven cam rather than chain drive. This made it more refined but it needs changing every 25 - 30k miles OR ELSE! All M40's are fuel injected too.

Capacities were now different - the 316i was 1596cc & the 318i was 1796cc. The M40 was catalyst-ready.

Power for the M40 316 was 102bhp @5500rpm, 105lb/ft @ 4250rpm

Power for the M40 318 was 115bhp @5500rpm, 122lb/ft @ 4250rpm

A twin cam version of the 318 (the 318iS) was produced called the M42. This was 1796cc & power was 136bhp @6000rpm, 127lb/ft @ 4600rpm. This became the M43 in the later E36 3-series.

I can't imagine there will be much difference in the insurance between a 316 & 318. Neither are fast but the 318 is a bit more relaxed in how it goes. My own M40 316 Touring is surprisingly nippy but noisey as it has quite low gearing. Low down pull is a bit weak so you have to make good use of the gears. It will cruise at 85mph+ quite happily.

Andy - did the introduction of the 316i not coincide with the plastic bumpers - for '88 model year?

I thought it did too but when I checked Jeremy Walton's The Three Series Collectors Guide it said 1990.

However Walton's 6-series Enthusiast has plenty of inaccuracies so I wouldn't take it as gospel.

cheers everyone still looking out for a decent 316i to import just finishing the finals at the minute so anything but study is on my mind the next worry will be cash
- is it unusual to be writing lists of accessories that will far outweigh the cost and eventual value of the car
- its not exactly rational spending unless i offset it against my sanity!

I got a quote of six grand for a 318i which is slightly ridiculous i know i'm only 22 but have a clean full license for four years so that necessitates a lesser powered beast unfortunately

Six grand?????????????????

Even if you are talking euros that's plain daylight robbery!  I'm paying £200 fully comp with my wife as 2nd driver & I think that's a bit steep for a 12 year old 316!

Is this because it's Ireland? (No idea where Westmeath is).

Cheaper to move to Blighty!

yeah man the quote was ridiculous and that was an adjusted quote via email westmeath is in the midlands of ireland and we must have fairly high accident rates or something the quote for the 316i based on a 1990-91 car is about 1900 euros the same as i paying now for a 1.4 mk6 escort which is grand to start off in but i think personally the car is very aesthetically challenged so a change is needed! and plus i have a slight obsession with the blue and white propellers which will contribute to my current student /graduate financial embarassment.
