High enough miles. Age in a Porsche wouldn't bother me, as long as it has been looked after. I'd try for a 993 C2 if possible - so much more sorted in lots of respects. That one is an absolute honey though! I'd be tempted if I were you...

The 964 was built when porsche had no cash and as a result corners were cut.. this is the most unreliable of recent 911's.. drive shafts being a common problem... I would look for a 993 if i were you.They are a world apart in reliability and handling terms, and of course looks... Actually i'd hang on to the m5 as it would have the 964 for breakfast!

That particular model of porsche is a bit of a handful.  A close relative has had two of those 964's (the last of the air cooled ones I think) and his were immaculate (with under 20k miles), and the bills are extremely steep.  Whatever you think of BMW servicing costs porsche is another leg up altogether.  I know you can get specialists that will do it cheaper but that is a high mileage car and even though it has been well maintained, you never know whats around the corner.

Another thing, the M5 is easier to drive faster on public roads, even though thats a 4wd model.

Save for a 993 or an E46 M3 if I wanted something a bit less saloon like than your current car.

I do love those transitional 911's, the newer shapes dont really do much for me. But I dont think its at all fair to compare it with the m5 tho - they are SO different in all respects; close to comparing a car with a motorbike IMHO!!!

That porsche has probably depreciated almost as much as it ever will - so you could get it for a year and see how the relationship goes??? Wont cost you all that much even with the higher servicing as the M5 would be depreciating a fair bit over the same period... Just a thought.

Just on the depreciation thing, thats not entirely true.  I know that when you look on carzone etc you will see that these cars seem to have a minimal value but actually finding a buyer it for it at that money is a different matter.

I know also that porsches are supposed to be bulletproof and will go forever if looked after correctly but a lot of people when buying them expect a low mileage example; the cars are so impractical for a lot of people they are often second cars so buyers come to expect one that has done certainly less than 5k miles per year of ownership.

At 120k I think this one falls into a category that would put a lot of potential buyers off so it might be difficult to shift if you needed to do it in a hurry.

You can get a decent porsche cheap these days.........sell your own car.........but 30 or 40k with it and you can get a nice clean, low 98 / 99 pork 911.  Perfect.
