Hi Paul, UK/US destined CS's had the option of a vinyl Roof to make it look a bit more "Sporty". have had conflicting reports from E9 friends in the States about what lies underneath. Some have found primed but unpainted Steel, others fully finished paintwork.I would assume it depended on what cars were in the Finished Goods store when the shipping instructions came in. If you e-mail BMW Heritage Museum your Vin No, they will respond with date of manufacture and in some cases which options the car came with . I am also wrestling with the question of wether or not to strip the vinyl off mine when I have it resprayed later this year Regards,Dax 69 2800 CS (without Vinyl) 73 3.0 CS with

Hi Paul, I prefer E9's Nude,But!!!! I am a bit concerned about possibleRust hiding under my "Oirish" CS as it has a sun-roof and the edges of the vinyl are a bit tatty.Guess there's only one way to find out?Compare this :
With This: If you exclude the paint job required the non-vinyl just looks cleaner |

Most E9's with vinyl roofs had just primer underneath. Same idea with Fords Escort and Capri really. It is all a matter of taste, I don't think that there is a general consensus on them being better on or off. It is a bit of a period fashion. Personally I think they look horrible and I would remove them. I would imagine that if you have a sunroof it will make it even more prone to rust. It does not affect the value, rust does.

Gather from friends who bought new E9's in the 70's that if a Client wanted a vinyl roof, Garage would take a stock painted car and have a roof fitted locally as BMW were only manufacturing betwen 20-30 E9's a month and clients were in a hurry for their cars.If you email your Vin no to info.konzernarchiv@bmw.de they can sometimes tell wether the car had a factory fit or not If you are respraying anyway,it's not going to make much difference wether there is primer or finished paint under. My choice is vinyl off.

I am pretty sure the vinyl roof was a dealer installed option and as such should have paint under it. They are tragic and should be removed as they give no benefit and plenty of potential problems.
